What is the best method/program to edit mp3 files and resave them with the least amount of recompression problems?

I have the iriver ihp140 recorder which does record wav but only for an hour. Using the record setting as mp3 and varying bitrates, I can record live music in much longer unattended times, i.e., two to five hours at 64kbps - 320kbps.

So I want to take a three hour 160kbps file, open in Adobe Audition, segment, normalize, etc., and save out to 128kbps mp3 or wav. All this with minimum sound loss from the original unedited mp3.

How is MP3DirectCut different from Audition (Cooledit)? I will check it out.

It does not decompress the mp3 to wav for editing and then have you re-encode it. MP3DirectCut edits the mp3 directly

Are there other programs that do this?

Yeah, but MP3DirectCut is the best for MP3.
I heard of MusicCutter but haven't tried it.
