Full Version: how to handle a .rm ditch video and audio to mp3?
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Hydrogenaudio Forum > General Audio
subverse
a question for the pros:

I have a bunch of .rm files (real audio) I can either steam them or download them (for a class). What i want to be able to do is get them on CD. Is there a util that i can use that will ditch the video portion and just decode/encode the audio into mp3 or wav or any other more managable format?

Thanks

The only tool I know that can extract audio from an .RM is Streambox Ripper. Unfortunately, this product was forced off the market sometime ago by the RealAudio people. If you already have it or know someone who does, it is exactly what you need.

Have you tried using a program called TINRA (That Is Not Real Anymore)? It's the only program I know that can remotely do what you ask. It converts Real Media into an AVI. Personally, I've never had much luck with it, but maybe it'll work for you.

If you can get it into an AVI file, then you can use a program like VirtualDub to get at the audio.

EDIT: Mentioned how to get at the audio from an AVI.

mplayer for linux will do it (here)

tongue.gif silly windows users.

mplayer can play pretty much any video format i've seen online (quicktime, real, windows media), all audio formats (it can also use xmms plugins, so yeah it can play musepack)... also, dvds (no menu support yet, but who cares) ...

it can also extract the audio from any video stream, either keeping the original format, or decoding to pcm. i did this recently to rip the rush in rio live dvd (see dreamliner77's avatar biggrin.gif ) and encoded the wavs to mpc.

it also has a command-line transcoder, but i haven't really used it

you can download a windows port of mplayer here: ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32-beta/

although you might need some plugins to handle realmedia files. you can use the same ones that are used for linux, see the homepage or the manpages/readmes for instructions.

QUOTE(the mplayer qt/wma/rm codecs page)
useless for ms windows or microsoft mplayer2 users, as it contains modified DLLs, and doesn't contain .EXE/.BAT/.INF files required by windows installation.

Download only if you run MPlayer on x86 unix (linux/bsd/solaris) system!

I was aware of the Windows port of mplayer, but didn't mention it for this very reason. You can't play RM files in Windows with mplayer. crying.gif

I just thought of something... people here often mention using Total Recorder software to record sound output from anything... try looking that up.

I just remembered, dBpowerAMP can do it. Down side is that it's rather slow. Realtime it seems.
