Full Version: Using FLAC instead of Monkey's Audio?
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Lossless Audio Compression > FLAC
Garathor
I have compressed my CD collection using Monkey's Audio on the EAC images. I will be storing them on CD-Rs. I have read several horror stories on this forum about corrupt Monkey's Audio files, and i am wondering if this is reason enough to change to FLAC?
sshd
A single error in a Monkey's Audio file, will render the file unusable. Slightly broken FLAC files can still be played - but they are still broken.

If you are worried about losing data on CD-R media, consider creating par2 files and store them on different CD-R media. For example - 1 par2 disc for every 8 data discs. You can repair heavy damage/missing files with par2 files.

There is a nice Windows tool called QuickPar that can create par2 files and repair damage.

sshd suggested exactly what I am doing with my files except I'm using DVD+Rs. QuickPar on my machine takes a while, but I feel the recovery aspect is worth it.

I'm fortunate enough to not to have had to test this in real life, but I feel pretty secure in the results.

Current settings are Blocksize 102400, and 15% Recovery. Takes about 15 minutes per album of FLAC files to generate the PAR files.

These last days I have downloaded, tested, decoded, converted & mass-retagged more than 65gig of Monkey Audio files to Flac ... on my experience this file corruption problem is a myth ...
on 65gig I found: 2 damaged files ... & both were readable with winamp with an error message ... (no more error message if you put the "ignore bitstream error" plug option on)
... so yes Flac is better than Monkey Audio IMHO ... but for all other reasons ...

becarefull ... even if HA is great ... there are some audio hoax spreaded on HA ... this is one of those IMVHO ... I use Flac & to be fair with MA I must say it is not so true ... if not completly false ...

Edit: One week later 80gig of ape tested & flac converted, still no completly dead ape file found ...

I've got 250GB of monkeys audio encoded music, and only once did I have a problem decoding - but that was due to the version of MA I was using (the file was encoded in 3.92, tried to decode with 3.96 and it didn't work so installed 3.92 and everything was fine).

Moving to flac now, but for one reason only - found this great jukebox software that allows me to create my own set top box style music server:
MusicBox

Flac files are bigger (not much) and have had problems decoding them (seeking problem), but author of MusicBox found a solution which works for me.

I am sure it was due to some weird system issues at the time, but I had a freshly captured WAV (from a tape)/converted to Ape file become corrupt after 1-2 days (as in completely unplayable in anything). Captured the same song from the same tape and it happened again very quickly. EDIT: now that I think about it, that was when I first switched to flac and never really returned to the ape format.
And I have had a few other ape files that were from waaay back that were corrupt on me when I tried to play them some months later.

I use APE 3.98a1 instead of FLAC (I tested the both) because there are bugs in seeking sad.gif

Sounds like you need to look at your hardware setup, especially your ram.

I've come across the seeking problem, but solution is to add 1 second seekpoints:
Workaround for seeking problem

It works for me.

Mm, I wouldn't use that version of APE ... I had some problems with it (funny, seeking problems wink.gif )

Really? Seeking problems with APE 3.98a1?
I have no problems with it... When have u problems? with all ape files?

I have problems seeking with all 3.98a1 files (no matter if I use the RadLight's DirectShow filter or Winamp/foobar). Could it be that I encoded the file badly? unsure.gif biggrin.gif
