in replaygain i've got the pre-amp set to +6db 'cos i like my music loud, which of 'cos makes the hard limiter kick in all the time, i don't think i can percieve a quality difference. Does it affect it?

Thanks

OT: Don't you have a volume knob on your amplifier?

I agree... that or when you are browsing the web and a site starts playing music at you (one of the most offensive web things ever) and you have to make a desparate dive for the volume control.

A little OT, but try Proxomitron. You can filter all kinds of stuff out of websites, including midi and I believe other sound.

That's a little over the top. In IE, there's an option to turn off sound playback for websites (Extras -> Internet Options -> Advanced).

You can do that in Opera too.

File -> Preferences -> Multimedia -> uncheck "Enable embedded audio"

Yeah, but deleting Flash would smile.gif. BTW, isn't there some setting in Flash to turn off sound?

Yes, it will affect sound quality, because the music will be more compressed in dynamics. However, you've just said you like your music loud, so it should sound _better_ with the additional compression. (It will sound worse for most people)

Another thing to keep in mind is that the limiter trades off compression versus clipping. If you turn it off, you might get clipping, which will sound worse.

There is no 'best' setting for everyone. If there were, I'd make it the default and remove the switch.
