Full Version: Clipped MPC Files

Hi,
I'm new to MPC and really like it as the quality, for archiving purposes, is ace!

I have ripped several CD's using EAC and some of them are examples of some pretty crappy sound engineering as they are clipped.

Can I remove the clipping from MPC in the same way as I can from MP3 files using MP3Gain?

If this can be done and it involves using Replay Gain some help with Replay Gain would be much appreciated as I don't have a clue.

Thanks,
auldyin

Replaygain is well supported:

1.) download latest command-line decoder package at http://www.uni-jena.de/~pfk/mpp/ (bit hard to find - look under "Precompiled Decoder Binaries (16 bit output)" - replaygain.exe is inlcuded.

2.)extract to your musepack folder, and to your system folder (for example, c:windows, or c:winnt)

3.)download speek's frontend (excellent work btw speek, thanks!), extract to your musepack folder, and fire it up

4.)under the 'replaygain' tab, select a directory (album gain is set assuming albums each have their own directory), use --auto in the commandline and Go.

5.)switch on replaygain and/or clip-protect in the winamp mpc input plugin, and select your headroom, then Play!

hope this helps. for latest stuff see http://www.uni-jena.de/~pfk/mpp/. if you're lost try http://www.musepack.org

Hi,
I'm not really picking up on this, perhaps I can be clearer.

1. Can I permanently remove clipping from an MPC file? (eg rip an album, encode to mpc, remove clipping using--xyz--, archive mpc file. When required decode mpc file, burn to CD to produce unclipped album)

2. If so, what software and how to use it? (Speeks fron end is fine but I cannot get mpc files to do anything...error says cannot patch *.mpc)

3. I'm getting far too old for this "young man's game"

Thanks, auldyin

Tonderai,
I was typing when you posted.........I'll look into your suggestions

Am I misunderstanding what clipping is?

I understood that a sound (frequency) was clipped (top of wave cut off) because it was too loud in comparison to the other "volumes" and that by scaling all "volumes" down this would have the effect of removing the clipping by reducing the volume.

I get a horrible feeling that I'm off the pace on this one.

ReplayGain is reversible. It writes some values to the header, then the winamp plugin uses those whilst decoding (i.e. playing) to 1.) normalise the volumes of all tracks 2.) prevent clipping occuring whilst decoding. So it dosn't permanently alter the waveform, and can be switched on or off via the plugin. I'm unsure as to whether this can help with remedying badly mastered cd's (someone?). I have a feeling that replaygain can help remove (or soften) the clipping, but that the peaks are still distorted. If that makes any sense, I'm obviously getting out of my depth here ;(

Use WaveGain (here) to apply replaygain to wavs permanently for burning cds etc. For listening to mpc's use replaygain instead.

It seemed quite simple before I started writing it down sad.gif Anyways, it does work well once you get it up and running.

ReplayGain cannot skip ID3v2 tags. EAC writes it by default so your files probably have it. You will need to remove those tags before ReplayGain works.

And before you ask how to do that, read this.
