Only you know... smile.gif
Do some ABX tests at 192 or 256kbps, see if you can tell the difference between that and FLAC. Better still, use Lame 3.90.3 and --alt-preset standard (see the sticky's)... I have a sneaky suspicion you wont tell the difference; if you do, think to yourself, "Will I hear this difference when I am active in the environment that my portable is going to be used?" smile.gif

... and if your car allows any "road noise" to creep in, you could probably lower the bitrate a little further and still enjoy the music while you are driving. In one of our autos, at least 192 kbps is essential; in the other we could drop the bitrate as low as 128 kbps (or occasionally 96 kbps) and no one would be any wiser! Still, unless you want to do multiple encodes of all your music I would not seriously suggest such a method. As Lev said, you really need to do some personal tests to determine what level is appropriate to your own hearing, and the environment in which you will be listening.
