Full Version: How to convert FLAC (vorbis) tags to ID3?

I used dbPowerAmp to transcode a big ape collection to flac for use in my PhatBox. The problem is that the PhatBox only recognizes ID3 tags while all of my new FLAC files have vorbis tags. Can someone point me to a Windows program that will convert the tags? Thanks.

I don't know about converting them, but you could use Tagger to remove all of the tags, and then auto tag them again using ID3.

foobar2000, probably?

I don't know of any product that can do that for sure, but The Godfather has a LOT of functions it can perform to tags in many formats, and it's free. It may very well have the means to either convert tags (which would require re-padding the encoded files, though), or at least applying ID3 tags with the info from FLAC tags.

If this product doesn't do it, then I don't know what else might. Worth a try, though.

Edit: Rjamorim's probably right. I've been surprised by foobar2000's capabilities many times, and I wouldn't be surprised if it can do tag conversions. But as I said, I think it would require re-padding the files to be able to apply the additional tag info. foobar2000 is free, as well.

While id3 on FLAC is permitted, it isn't recommended over the native vorbiscomment-like FLAC tags.

As foobar2000 tends to favour native tagging over non-native tagging, I doubt foobar2000 would help in this particular case.

The first tool I'd look into using would be Case's Tag. If Tag were incapable of adding id3 tags to FLACs, the next thing I'd try would be adding id3 data manually.

I agree, but the PhatNoise PhatBox and Kenwood Music Keg (car audio players) don't read FLAC tags, only ID3 and Vorbis Comments. So that means FLACs need ID3 tags to display track info on the head unit.

Tag can write ID3v1 tags, but not v2. Adding new tags (en masse) may be the only solution.

Thanks for the tip. smile.gif In that case I'd try testing "Tag --remove --force id3" or something similar.
