AGNULA's main task will be the development of two reference distributions for the GNU/Linux operating system completely based on Free Software (i.e. under a FSF approved Free Software license) and completely devoted to professional and consumer audio applications and multimedia development. One distribution will be Debian-based (DeMuDi) and the other will be Red Hat-based (ReHMuDi). Both will be available on the network for download and on CD.

The project started on the 1st April 2002 and will last for two years. In the second year the project will also extend to hardware platforms other than PCs (e.g. PowerPCs, 64-bit architectures).

Interesting stuff, and cool to see.

Too bad there's not a version based on gentoo though (perhaps the gentoo community will adopt similar functionality though, they already support the low latency patch and preemptive kernel patch out of the box, and emphasize the use of alsa). That'd really be quite sweet, especially with the upcoming icc compatible version.. that could have a huge impact on the perfomance of these applications.

Edit:

Kind of disappointing to see Bladeenc in the list of compressions, and MPC nowhere to be found :/

Ahh....yes....Gentoo....:)

I'm not expecting anything 'groundbreaking' from this project, but thought it may be interesting to some others here. My only fear is it might be counter productive, encouraging new users, attracted by the 'multimedia' badge, into a non-standard distribution. Most of the mainstream distros cover what is here already. Still - I wish them well.

As an aside: For those who are toying with the idea of linux I heartily recommend it. Like a few others here I still have to cross back to the darkside occassionally, but those times are becoming less and less frequent.

(Newbies may want to dabble with something other than Gentoo first though - lol.)

Cheers,

Olieb.
