i was checking on the LAME website that LAME alt preset STANDARD uses Joint Stereo. Would be better quality if it is normal stereo rather than Joint Stereo. ?
Another Question
Whilst encoding my files from wav to mp3 using LAME, I used the alt preset STANDARD and i noticed it used VBR, but when I play it in WINAMP 3 beta it doesnt recognise it as VBR.. any reason why?

Read Dibrom's first response in
this thread for the answer to your Stereo vs. Joint Stereo question.
Since I'm using Winamp v2.80, I really can't help you with your Winamp 3 question. Sorry.

It must be showing the average bitrate of the MP3 then.. or what do you mean it doesn't recognaise it?
Well when I play a file that is encoded in VBR it states that it is a VBR, but when I play a file that I have encoded using LAME alt-preset STANDARD it just shows one set kbps and not the word VBR
If it plays, and you truely have a file encoded with --alt-preset standard, then it's only some minor WinAmp3 display glitch (I don't have it installed so I can't check). Of course if it's playing, everything is otherwise ok.
In winamp's options/input/Nullsoft Mpeg audio decoder click on 'configure, then the 'Decoder' tab up top. Find where it says 'show average bitrate on vbr files' and uncheck it. It's at the bottom right.
Now you'll see the bitrate jump all over the place when you play a vbr file encoded in lame using presets. Nex
im using WinAMP beta 3 and in the Configuration it doesnt seem to have the option to disable/enable average bitrate VBR.
It does recognise VBR's and it says VBR on the window when it recognises one.. but for some reason it doesnt recognise the ones i encoded myself with the
LAME alt-preset-standard
you sure you use:
lame --alt-preset standard file.wav file.mp3
yes.. i used the front end Wav2LAME interface with the preset that was already built into it.
and whilst viewing it encode the files in the command prompt window i could see it doing its work with VBR

Well,
i was a sceptic, but now i think
that alt preset works great with Joint Stereo!
With alt presets a song encoded with Js is identical to original!
