i changed the capitalization in some of my filenames, removed them from the playlist and readded them. foobar still views them as their original name. went from "ohgR - chemtale.mp3" to "ohGr - ChemTale.mp3", but foobar still looks at it as the first. any solution?

If the files has any tags, then it won't matter what you name them, as the metadata within the files will be displayed using the %artist% - %album% %title% scheme. You can easliy rename the file, by first modifiying the title (view track properties) to whatever you would like. Afer you have dont this, simply rename the file from within Foobar by highlighting and then right-clicking on the track, and selecting Massstagger ---> Rename Files. From within the dialouge box, specify what data Foobar should use for the new file names. To make a file name that consists of the artist, then title enter the following (in the output filename field):
%artist% %title%
Then press the preview button to see if is to your liking. Finally, check the "Same as Source File or Directory" button before pressing ok. Foobar will then rename the file according to the contents of the tag, in the same folder as the origional.
You could also strip the tag from the file, (Database --> Remove Tag(s) from files). If you don't care about the tags, this would be an easy solution.
i'm aware of the tags, but i often strip every file of tags and guess them from the file, and it's annoying to have the songs uh... mis-capitalized.

By the looks of that screenshot you haven't stripped the tags from that file. The "metadata" box (in the file info dialog) is a list of all the tags in the selected file.
Try database -> remove tags again as Excrono suggested.
Windows file system is case-insensitive, and so is foobar2000's database.
In order to make foobar2000 recognize the changes you've made you must either
a) remove those files from the database (make sure that you remove them from all playlists after that), then re-add them (restarting fb2k may be necessary)
or
b) nuke the database and re-populate it.
