Hi all friends, I'm a new guy in HA Forums and Ogg Vorbis. I hope someone can help to clarify these questions:

how much bitrate ogg is equal to 128kbps mp3?
how much bitrate ogg is equal to 192kbps mp3?
how much bitrate mp3 is equal to 128kbps ogg?

conditions: oggenc v1.0.1, normal music styles (pop music).

Thanks!

Well, the last listening test which compared the two at 128 kbps showed Vorbis beat mp3 (lame).

It will be hard to give you an exact answer on this one.

My answer:

192 MP3 ~= 96kbps OGG

I personally think an OGG can do the same job at half the bitrate. But it all depends in which encoder you use for MP3. I've had some 192kbps Mp3s that I can beat at 45kbps OGG... but you get crap quality like that off p2p...

if you use a GOOD mp3 encoder (lame or fhg), you'll find that ogg beats it at 'just over' half the bitrate. in most cases.

pH: Ok, I agree ogg is generally better than mp3. But it doesn't do magic. And what you claim looks like magic to me.

No blind tests, no samples, nothing?

You won't last long here, man.

please give some proff of that claim, as it seem way of according to other listening test.

You are violation the HA TOS 8..or something

hehe just wanted to be the one to say that smile.gif

Are you kidding?

Ok, perhaps it could be true in this case. But remember that then you have to use Plugger or ISO/Blade for MP3 encoding.

Fraunhofer institute (or who was it?) claims a 30% advantage for AAC over MP3. Vorbis and AAC-LC have performed reasonably similar in listening tests here (with vorbis getting better at really low bitrates, but that was not in question here). So I think it's more reasonable to say around 30% advantage for Vorbis...
