A simple question for you guys who are doing a great job btw!

Which lame build are you using or would you use for archiving your own music using --preset standard?

No need to state why smile.gif

I suspect this answer would help a lot of people decide what to use for same purpose without having to spend hours and hours reading this forum looking for a simple answer only to more confused as they go smile.gif

Thanks!

Mazter

Please read FAQ and wiki before posting questions.

The recommended version is old though so this thread might be worth a read:

edit: Noticed you asked for John33 and Gabriels oppinion.
Mazter
yes i know about these threads

i just want to break it down very simple since i have faith in the answer i will get from these two and their recommendations!

I know it says this is my first thread but i am not new to this at all smile.gif

I just feel this would help alot of the users who just want that simple answer.

I know John33 made the 3.95.1 a stable release so I assume he has some confidence in it. I already use it but due to all this confusion on these boards i'd like to hear if he is that confident in it that he would use it for he's own archival encodings.

Also gabriels opinion means a lot since he obviously has a deeper knowledge.

Looking for simple confirmations and the weekend smile.gif

As I see it, this thread only adds to the problem you hope to solve. In a week or so, this thread is just another one in the crowd, and there will be even more to read through in the search of an answer to something that is probably covered already by the FAQ or the wiki.
Mazter
Hmm...thats hardly a very constructive post though mate

Please only John33 and Gabriel post their simple answers here and maybe there is a chance people will find the simple answer they are looking for on the very first page!

No offence ofc

Spending "hours and hours" reading this forum to find the answer! Please don't exaggerate.

The very first line of the wiki article that Jan S. linked to contains this:
QUOTE
Lame 3.90.3 found on this website is the recommended version

Also, in the MP3 forum (the forum where you posted this topic), there is a sticky thread "List of recommended LAME compiles". It contains the answer right in the first post.

New users coming to this board, ignoring the FAQ and sticky posts, and instead ask some users about their personal opinions will only decrease the signal-to-noise ratio of this board.

If you don't trust the HA recommendations, and still want to ask somebody else's personal opinion, why not send a PM instead of starting a new public thread ? It may even cause more confuse new users.

PS: Is it just my internet connection, or is HA awfully slow today ?

Riiiiight.

So nobody else is allowed to reply to your post ? That further reinstates my point that you should have sent a PM instead.

Simple answer? 3.90.3. wink.gif But I'm kind of an old fashioned guy!! laugh.gif

<sigh> i suppose this request was just to simple to leave it without comments...

Look, as i already stated, this was and still is a very simple request. I am not a newbie but a long time oldie in the mpc arena and mp3 to some. Other names i used are Odin and Buscu and i ran the old Valhalla MPC hub for abt 1 year.

For what its worth...

I dont exaggarate! Some like to get their facts straight and do spend a lot of time searching...

I am not stupid! I know where i am and where to find this "official" info.

I simply asked a question for two special guys but I see this is getting out of hand so after this post i wont make another unless they in fact would like to share their personal opinions with me and others. Note, i am not asking any user but two guys who should know this subjects better than most.

oh, and yes its very slow! even got a out of connections message from the mysql server it runs on.

[edit] John33! Thanks mate smile.gif
Gabriel
I am using 3.96, but please not that I am not recommending anything. This is just my own choice, and you should remember that my priority is to develop the encoder, and not to use it.

I don't want to offend anybody, but why did you ask for John33's oppinion?
He just provides the compiles (thanks John) and works on the front-ends (lame_enc.dll/lame.exe).
3.90.3 ist the most tested version concerning quality, so I'd advise you to go with that.

Gabriel, as a lame dev, will most likely go with the latest one, since it's his work.

Absolutely fair comment. wink.gif My opinion is no more valid than anyone elses. I'm flattered to be mentioned in the same breath, but I'm not in the same league really. sad.gif
Mazter
I see your point dev0!

I though John33 also was developing but hey, we got two answers from two sides of the table so it is perhaps good after all? wink.gif

If i should to conclude something, which I want very much, then it would have to be that for my archival purposes both compiles are very viable but i choose 3.96b or in fact I choose to follow the latest beta/stable release as they are released simply because I believe in a positive overall development and I have confidence in our dear developers smile.gif

Of course I avoid alphas as anyone should (for this purpose)

If someone is however of the more "nervous" type than the old 3.90.3 will grant the most stable if not the most efficient results even though I seriously doubt it will be better than the latest beta/release build in every case. Its just more safe with more headroom which comes at a cost of larger size/slower encode time.

This conclusion is of course strictly personal! wink.gif

Thanks all!!

Fair enough, but I don't think we learned anything new here.

I still have the impression that this thread was of very little use and only decreased the signal-to-noise ratio...
