My classical mp3s and .ape's have alot of background hiss/white noise. Is there a way to remove this? Its driving me crazy!!!

Try using the equalizer to turn down the high frequencies.

whoa whoa whoa there... equalizer alters the sound, this is a horrible faux paux.

I have a $300 soundcard, $50 cable, $200 headphone amp, $55 cable, and $350 headphones, so I'm going to rich, full, detailed playback as accurate as possible.

If you're wondering, My setup is:

monkeys audio or alt--preset extreme mp3s --> Foobar 2000(resampling to 24bit padded to 32bit/ASIO/crossfeed/advanced limiter) --> RME digi96/8 Pad --> Headphile 1/4" to RCA CPU Silver cable --> Meta42 (AD8620 opamp 2x EL2001 buffers per channel) --> Oehlbach Sennheiser replacement cable --> HD-650's


I think my solution is to stop ripping live recordings of classical music. This seems to be where the hiss is found.

So will anything else that will remove the hiss if I am not completely wrong. After all removing the hiss in the first place is altering the sound already.



This is really nice for you and I hope you enjoy them a lot . However I seriously dought that anyone around here could care less how expensive your equipment was. Also I have serious doughts that 50 $ cables will do anything to improve your sound. It seems to me the onyl thing they do is make your wallet slightly less bulky

well, ripping differently is one way to not get the hiss.

yeah the cables were a waste, they were just for piece of mind. well, my point with the money is to emphasize that the *LAST* thing I want to do is sacrifice sound quality.

blah. my solution seems to be to go to my schools library and check out their cds, until i find a recording that doesn't have hiss. they have a massive classical collection, so this is feasible.

there are some plugins for audio production that can remove noise, but i don't know of a freeware one.. you might be able to download a trial version of Adobe Audition (formerly known as CoolEdit2000) which has a Noise Reduction plugin..

the way these plugins work is by analyzing a "silent" passage in the audio file.. it makes a profile based on the noise found in the silent passage, then uses the profile to remove the noise.. but as picmixer points out, this is still altering the recording by removing frequiencies..

Audacity is free and includes a noise remover like the one described by bogsnarth.

you can use CONVOLVER if you have impulse for simulate DNR (dynamic noise reduction)

You will NOT be able to remove the hiss without reducing sound quality... its just cant be done.

With all your expensive equiptment, you should stop complaining and go buy the original CDs/LPs.

You can remove hiss (and cracks/pops) with Syntrylium CoolEdit (now called Adobe Audition). It does this job quite good (although can leave some artifacts).

if i'm not mistaken, he said this problem is arising in things he has ripped himself..

plz read more carefully in the future before trying to talk down to people..

Pardon me again, but when you meant ripping, did you mean ripping as in from CDs, or ripping as in piracy? This is for the purpose of clarification.

Isn't ripping from cd's the only way to rip? How would copying data files constitute ripping?

Either way, I'm ripping from the CD's, some of which I own and some of which I'm borrowing from friends. Once I get a real job in the next year, I plan to purchase all of my favorite artist's cds. Right now, that would be about $5000 so I can't even think about it.

you need a noise gate. i'm pretty sure i've seen a noise gate DSP for fb2k around the place somewhere
set it to around 30-40db and you'll usually get the hiss.
it really depends how loud the hiss is though. if it's too loud, you'll lose a major portion of the subtleties of your music.

what'd be nice is some routing of effects, so you could create a 2nd audio chain to an eq, into a noise gate, then run that through a subtractive synthesis filter into the main output.

but that's getting a little involved for a realtime mp3 player
