Sorry this is OT, but I thought you were a Vorbis dev Garf!?
Cobra
Veeery bad news sad.gif I hope it is joke!!! I wonder when they will try to buy e.g. QuantumKnot or someone other - from "new wave of Ogg Vorbis developers"...

EDIT: Look at member title: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showuser=13

Since when did taking on a job mean not continuing with your hobby?

QuantumKnot
This is rather old news. His title was changed many weeks ago. wink.gif

It's about time someone started paying Garf. biggrin.gif

It seems unlikely Ahead would let Garf continue to work on a competing codec.

Hmm. Well, I definitely don't mind Garf putting all his talent and effort into either codec. Ahead's AAC implementation will go far with Garf on it (of course not forgetting the other developers too biggrin.gif)

Well, does Menno still work on FAAC...?
Daijoubu
That's like Turck MMCache author, Dimitry, got employed by Zend...
YinYang
ARGHHH.

The AAC-vampires got to him. He has been turned to the dark side. Unclean mofo. he's become a twin of "Darkness" together with the Murphy-brothers. There goes his invitation to Summerisle.

Yes, I've been reading Sluggy, doing some Chapelle and watching Christopher Lee.

Hmm, good point. I wonder why/how Menno gets away with that. It's like a Coca-Cola factory worker drinking Pepsi in his lunch break.

I saw this a couple of weeks ago and I say good for garf! He obviously is quite talented and deserved to be paid handsomely. I can't believe the arrogance of some people who say that it is "bad news." That just annoys me; be happy for someone else instead of just thinking about yourself.
Chastity
I have to agree, being good news. It's nice to be paid for something you love to do.

He doesn't

Only Knik works on Faac these days - exactly because Menno is now working on the competition.

The problem is not that he got paid, problem is that he developes HE-AAC which is competintion for Ogg Vorbis AND that he will not help developing Ogg Vorbis.

Hmm, now you want to decide for other people what they can and cannot do. Nobody has any obligation whatsoever to develop open source software.

Now, I don`t want to decide for him, I`m only saying that it is not good that Ogg Vorbis, which hasn`t ultra much developers, just lost talented developer, on top of that this developer started to develop competeting codec. That`a all!

Hmmm... I think Ogg Vorbis "lost" Garf quite some time ago already. He certainly did express his disappointment in the development of the format several times in the past.

And more competition is a good thing.

MP4/AAC is supported by both Ahead and Apple. It's future is a lot brighter than Vorbis's one, so I see this as a good thing when someone talented gets paid for doing what he is good at.
