Is that why you want to find out about the active user interface? It really does sound like you're using a hack to add a volume slider to the user interface...
yes, that's what i'm doing... 
it works pretty well (at least for me) with [foo_ui_default] but [foo_ui_columns] and [foo_ui_tunes] need a slightly different handling.
i hope i don't have to find out which ui is used by studying the ui's behavior...
