hey, ive recently tried out foobar to see what all the fuss is about. First impressions are good, i like the control and functionality.
But on winamp I remember using the mad mp3 decoder, and asio output for resampling. and well, I can get the resampling in foobar, but what about mp3 decoding? is the default foobar mp3 decoder as good as the mad winamp plugin? or can i get a mad version for foobar.
any help much appreciated!

If you want to compare for yourself, kode54 made a mad decoder plugin for foobar2000 which you can donwnload on
his page.

Erm, this only refers to dithering used by foobar2000 and MAD decoder.
As for the actual decoding, I'm not aware of anybody proving that either is better. MAD does show better results in Fraunhofer institute's compliance tests.
A decoder based on MAD sources has been released recently, and it can be downloaded from

Plus, that test was based on in_mad, which does its own (apparently not so good) dithering. Since libmad does not dither on its own, foo_mad's output is dithered down in the same way as the default mpglib decoder.
We could use some serious testing and reporting.
