Hope this doesn't break any rules but this is a good cause
QUOTE
I need help promoting the following:

Bennett Environmental, Inc. is proposing to import large quantities of toxic waste (100,000+ tons per year of contaminated soil), from polluted sites in the U.S. & Canada, then burning it in the Chaleur region of New Brunswick. Bennett facilities have been rejected in the province of British Columbia, Ontario and by the state of Massachusetts. But, the New Brunswick government, dismissing fierce opposition from doctors, scientists, environmentalists, and many concerned citizens, has given preliminary approval for a Bennett toxic waste incinerator in Belledune, New Brunswick. The incinerator is currently under construction and could be operational in the spring of 2004. The public comment period ends on April 19, 2004. We need help getting the word out!

Please visit http://www.stopbennett.com to sign the petition.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

They're going to incinerate soil contaminated with toxics in New Brunswick?

That's not just monstrous but supremely stupid, it introduces the toxic substances into the air which is subsequently inhaled by anything living in a huge radius. Even on the off chance that the incinerator is absurdly efficient at oxidising organics, it's impossible to combust metals away. Any Mercury, Cadmium or other metal contaminants will become airborne and will end up in animal lungs, plant tissue, as well as the watertable or in the ocean, adsorbed to particulate matter that is then eaten by detritivores.
I've worked in and around the Hunter's Point superfund site, and the soil there should not be incinerated, even after being treated to remove some of the nastier VOCs.
