i've bought last week a new cd and i saw it was copy controled, no problem for me i thought, but in the ride home, the car cd player could not play the cd. Back home i tried to play the cd with my cd-player but sometimes the cd does not play. To solve the problem ( sometimes it's help to copy the cd) i tried to copy the cd, either with nero burning rom or eac. Normally copy controlled cd's are not a problem for my pc to copy but with this cd nero fails. Tried to rip the wav's from the cd with eac but eac give my the message

seems like one of the first track's on the cd are wrong, cause every new track read modus i select i get this message

any help?

I haven't had (or read about) similar problems so far, but here's some information that could be helpful:

Additionally to what you can find in the links above, trying other audio extraction programs like Easy CDDA or Audiograbber could be worth a try as well as Alternate CDFS and AnyDVD.

Return it to the shop you bought it from immediately and complain that it is defective. If the disc in question claims to be a CD, carries the CD logo or the shop advertised it as a CD then you can reasonably expect the disk to be a standards compliant CD. It doesn't comply with the standard - so it's broken. When you take it back don't take no for an answer.

It is our responsibility as clued-in people to not support this copy protection BS and to make it clear to the retailer why we are returning the goods.

I have had some luck ripping copy-protected disks with CDparanoia (CDex on Windows) that wouldn't rip with Eax. Might be worth a try if you don't want to return the disc.

I've had a similar problem with my Lite-On and a copy controlled cd... I think what I did was using CDex or burst mode on eac... Can't be of many help tho, I'm sorry...

Remember to write the record company asking for a non-defective replacement. Thay might take the hint.

I ordered an expensive Classic Punk Boxset, the complete Tool catalog and some other stuff from the U.S. and China that will arrive next week, although I got all of them already "obtained" as lossless or HQ rips (yes, go figure RIAA)

I swear if any of these are infested with CP, they will be the last legit media I have bought in my life

hey, thanks for the replies, but i have copied the damn cd , seems that an old pentium 1 @ 200 mhz with his 24X max creative cd-rom drive can read the cd, but is not capable of ripping it with eac or create an image with nero. He only plays it, and with some wave editor software of creative recorded it to pcm wave format. Took me a long time, but i've done it. The cd is in my opinion broken but he plays on my home stereo, but i can understand that they wanna keep the illegal copy's of the cd to a min.

Older stuff, that was released non-copyprotected, doesn't seem to be switching to copyprotected discs, so I think you should be OK with classic punk and Tool.

Well, I think so too. I only listen to old rock and heavy-metal songs. Who cares about the new shit anyway? They can damn well release a million copy-protected CDs by Christina Aguilerra or Britney Spears. I never bother to even look at them. If you like such music, you are better off downloading the songs from iTunes or something. You will save tons of money that way. It's not worth paying $10++ for a CD which contains one song which you want. iTunes is much better.

unfortunately new stuff does get released, and some of it is good. obviously not the britneys and cristina's but stuff like the cat empire, radiohead, audio bullys (i'm a sucker for the cockney accent) and plenty of other bands that are worthy of fan's support.

they get no choice as to whether their albums are released corrupt or not.

if this is the case, try writing to the band, rather than the label. you'll probably get a more positive result if you're diplomatic. i'm sure most of the bands will think it's bullshit if you explain that the "CD"s can't be played, are full of errors and can help put the last nails in the coffin of your older equipment (my yamaha cd-29 hardly plays anything at all after having tried one of these "CD"s). even better would be to tell the band that you will not be buying their album, but will still be buying tix to their live shows (better dynamics that way anyway).

so... yeah. don't even try to rip them if there's a chance you can take it back and exercise "the customer is always right".

perhaps something should be added to the FAQ or one of the stickies about this issue. it comes up quite often, and the best solution is to make a big stink about it (it's also a solution that doesn't involve those nasty "circumvention" clauses from draconian copyright laws)

Like music_man_mpc said, you should be fine with those. I recently bought Tool's Undertow and it had a slip of paper in it thanking me for buying legit and asking me not to share music, but the CD itself was uncrippled.

I think you just made an analogue rip. The sound probably came out of the analogue output of your CD-ROM drive, and into an analogue input on your sound card, and was then re-digitised. That's not the best quality.


Anyway, isn't there a number to phone or a website to visit or something on the CD? I think there are usually "clean" versions of the CDs available for people with equipment which won't play the copy protection version. You just have to ask the record company. Or buy from a different country.

I say it every time we have this discussion: If you buy a CD, and it doesn't play on one of your CD players, but you keep it anyway, then you're sending the wrong message to the industry. For one thing, they're monitoring returns to see if the things play properly (you think they actually know? ) - if the CD isn't returned, they assumed it plays fine. So they'll keep using that exact technology.

I had The Beatles Let It Be... naked around here. The copy protection made the digital out of my CD-Player out of sync.
I asked EMI for a working version. All they offered me is to get another CD from different musicans from EMI. The Beatles CD, they said, is copy protected around the world and they can´t offer another version.

Then they were lying - it's not copy protected in the UK! I know - I bought a cheaper version from cd-wow.com, which was sourced from the USA and was copied protected. I returned it (it doesn’t play on my CD player), and bought a clean UK release from the local supermarket.

TBH, I didn't like the album anyway - give me a stereo CD of A Hard Day's Night any day!

Why isn't there one international list of reported copy-protected CD's? The ones I've stumbled across seems quite scattered and inconsistent.
