I have a concert on DVD. What lame command line should i use to get no more than 160(MAX). I would like to have an avg between 128-160. Any ideas?

Or perhaps should I use another compression technique?

You could always use something like --alt-preset 144. If you don't mind up to 160 though, you could just do --alt-preset 160 and it should come pretty close (maybe 155 to be safe).

It'd probably be better to use Ogg though for higher quality, if you're open to alternative formats.

--alt-preset 160, or slightly less if you REALLY don't want the average to go over 160. One problem with DVD audio is that it's usually 48kHz, while the --alt-presets are tuned for 44.1(CD sampling). You could try using ssrc for very high quality 48 --> 44.1 conversion. Personally, I suggest using BeSweet as it will do all this on the fly. This is good for a few reasons:
1. you don't need tons of room on your HD for the Wave files.
2. it is simpler(1 step instead of 3)
3. high quality(floating point numbers are used, where they wouldn't if you had Wave Files)

you can use the --alt-presets and most of the other lame commands in BeSweet. And if you want to try another format, OGG and AAC are also at your disposal using BeSweet.

oo, I have another problem, discovered it a few minutes ago.

I have a CDRW+DVD-ROM. A few months ago it stopped reading cd's, but it read dvd's just fine. I don't have a clue why. And yesterday I watched that concert from that DVD drive. And now it doesn't read DVD's too.

The laser lens is clean, I've checked it when it stopped reading cd's.

Anyone, help me!!!!!

Return the thing to the vendor or manufacturer. It seems defective. :-P

My DVD drive is possessed!!!!!!!!!

It starts to work when i insert a audio cd and then a dvd. When i eject the dvd and then try to insert it again it doesn't work!

I've encoded the audio with lame at 160. Sounds good. Is it possible to have mpc audio in a M$ avi file.


BTW: The guy which i have bought the dvddrive from is far, far away in another country. So returning the drive is impossible!!!!! (it's a 4x cdrw+dvd - kinda old insn't it)

I doubt. MPC won't ever work fine with AVI because it's a VBR format.

Wait until MCF is ready. Then you'll probably be able to use MPC, AAC, Vorbis, MP3...

For now, use Lame --alt-preset cbr 160 with your avi. The quality will be fine, fine.

You can't mux mpc into avis. You can however mux vbr mp3s made with lame into aivs without any trouble (and they sound great). I use the 128 VBR preset for movies (which actually avarages about 115) and the sound is good. For a concert DVD you might want to go slightly higher than this (eg 160), but there's no reason not to use VBR. Compatibility on all machines will be fine.

If you're less worried about compatibility, use ogg and mux into an ogm file using oggmux (there are some problems doing this using divx5x with b-frames though).

My 20 month old SCSI DVD does the same... It only accepts a two DVD discs, the rest, it just ejects them... I solved the problem by buying a new IDE drive instead...
