I use opera all over the place. Never had a problem on my two modern AMD systems (2100, 2700), not even on my wife's crappy K6. At work I've got an IBM netvista P4, 1.8GHz, 256MB ram. What a total piece of shit! Opera freaks out daily, usually when I first come into work. I have to wait for it to "wake up." WTF?

This shot was taken about a minute after shutting down opera.

Sys Specs:
OS: WinXP Pro SP1a
RAM: 1 GB
Opera: 7.23 (Build 3227) - Type in the url field: opera:about

Here's what I just witnessed:
CPU: 00 - 02
Mem Usage: 13,692 - 20,592

CPU 00 is when Opera is doing nothing.
CPU 01, through 02 is when Opera is loading a single page.
Mem Usage 13,692 was when I first launched Opera.

Note: Opera seems to start off light on my system, and with each page load the memory usage slowly starts to climb, it never goes back down. Perhaps Opera has a memory leak bug in it. It seldom crashes, but I've only seen it crash when it runs for a very long time such as over an hour, perhaps the crashing is memory hog related.

I usually leave it open forever with a LOT of pages open (20-30). Seems fine on the AMDs. This morning it was off on an endless POP3 transaction. POPped okay when I restarted it. I've got a P2-450 at home for an internet box and it actually performs better there.

I get the crashes every so often, but they don't seem to be related to any specific function.

Oh yeah. This is win2k SP4.

The high memory usage is caused by Opera's 'closed window' history I think (will be deleted after closing it).

Sometimes Opera freaks out and hogs the CPU for no appearant reason, sometimes it shows CPU usage spikes (this happens on nwvault). It's annoying but oh well, IMO it's still the best browser...

No, this is memory cache feature. You can disable this behavior in preferences - network and caching.
(When you have a lot of free ram Opera freely allocates it for caching web pages, so you can have instant 'back')

It is known that Opera slowly starts/quits when you have huge global.dat file (history of visited addresses, you can shorten it in prefs, too).

It has already been fixed in latest beta (unfortunately unstable yet, available on my.opera.com/forums)
