Full Version: Flac to lame preset medium
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Lossless Audio Compression > FLAC

I've searched this forum to its depths but have found no answers. Is there any program that will convert flac albums to lame preset medium because I use them in my car and medium is plently for that. Cause I cant find any, what I have found is as follows:

Lame commandline: Doesnt support flac files

dbPoweramp: Doesnt allow --preset medium

CDex: Doesnt allow --preset medium from built in encoder

Easy CD-DA Extractor: Has preset medium (uses 3.95) but the output bitrates are different between version 6.5 and 7 and both apparently use 3.95, which makes me question its reliability.

LampdropXPd: Doesnt allow input of flac files.

I dont want to convert them to wav because I will lose all the tags and I dont want to convert to ape so I can use them in lame, just flac to preset medium is all I need. Any ideas?

Thanks guys, lordreign.

foobar2000 is the solution.

You have to use foobar in CLI output mode. You can make you own line like lame --preset medium.

Thanks guys. Hey I have a version of the CLI on my computer but for future reference I cant seem to find it again on the foobar site, is it still there?

I can't seem to find it either by browsing the site, but it does exist.

You can do this with dbpoweramp if you use the Generic CLI Encoder and then use the lame.exe with the alt preset medium command line.

foobar2000's diskwriter plug will encode LAME MP3's at -aps.

Preferences -> Diskwriter -> LAME encoder

I'm using the special install of foobar2000 mind, I don't know if it's part of the normal install.

Just to throw another option into the mix, Speek's Multi Frontend does this very neatly using flac.exe to decode, lame.exe to encode and tag.exe to copy the tags, but combining these into a single button click. You have complete control over what versions of these programs are used and what command lines are passed to them.

You need to click on Locations and tell it where the three programs (flac, lame and tag) are located. Click on Options and tick "Copy tags from source files". Then in the main window choose LAME as the codec, type --preset medium in the options box and also make sure "Add tags" is ticked.

EDIT: punctuation.

From the sticky at the top of this very forum:

List of recommended LAME compiles

thanks ...
the problem is that i believe this is an icl build. this may cause a problem on my machine, also i read somewhere that icl builds are buggy and unreliable. am i mistaken at all. thanks again
dev0
LAME has been built with ICL for ages and there haven't been any reported problems.
In fact the recommended compile is built with ICL4.5 and a very specific set of options, since this is what Dibrom used during the initial tuning of the --alt-presets and any change could cause unexpected results.

Recent stable binaries (lame 3.90.3 doesn't support --preset medium) are available at Mitiok's site.

I thought the modified 3.90.3 exe on rarewares did?

Edit: Quick check on the rarewares mp3 site!

LAME 3.90.3 Modified bundle 2004-02-06
includes lame.exe, lame_enc.dll (--alt-preset standard & extreme with -Z option) modified to allow use of --preset as well as --alt-preset, also includes MEDIUM and FAST MEDIUM presets - ICL4.5 compile using Dibrom's switches

After trying several ways I found Frontah and it met my needs perfectly, such as giving me the choice of adding ID3v2 for compatibility and APEv2 for players which use them. Though you will have a little harder time directly listening to your new files I suppose. wink.gif

My 2nd pick would be phwip's suggestion, Multi frontend. Both are simple enough to use (particularly Multi Frontend) & don't need to be installed.
Hope this helps, tec

My vote goes to Frontah, too. For me, it's the simplest transcoder available.

I like the Universal Frontend. Comes with the modified 3.90.3 and the medium preset.

I'm using foobar to convert a bunch of lossless adn mpc music to lame-medium (200GB worth) and its going very slowly. I'm probably just used to mpc's insanely fast encoding, havn't use mp3 for a few years heh. Of all the options is any any faster?

I have a 3400+ a 2500+ and a 2.6p4 all working on this and still 8000 some files left.. still have quite awhile left :/

Also what is medium setting?
"
For high quality on portable MP3 players, you may use --alt-preset standard -Y (around 160 kbit/s). -Y usually limits to 16 KHz, something you likely won't notice in noisier environments.
"

Medium also is avging around 160kbits/sec for me... which should have i used? (asking while i got 8000 some songs queued total so nows the time to redo before its done much)
