Full Version: those little similarties btw songs

have you ever heard a song and thought 'wait a minute, this sound similar to... oh heck, similar to WHAT?'
if you then finayl are struck with the answer out of nowhere, a rush of (very basic)enlightment and happyness goes through you (well, at least through me biggrin.gif )

with most of these songs it difficult to deal with IMO, as you still got the impression of the other song in your head, which is directly liked to the 'stolen' melody...

I'm not talking of remixes, or bluntly stolen melodies, but of (slight) varieations of melodies, beats etc.

most of my friends and colleges don't care that much about music, so erverytime I come across this topic, they go like 'ah, mhmm, yes, and how's the weather today, fine, isn't it?'

so, here's the place to post all these songs, I bet there are a quite a few of them.

cheers,

Counting Crows - Colour blind

Evanescence - My Immortal

the piano melody is virtually the same. though it is slightly variated, it seems to be obvious that both melodies haven't been eveloped simply by themselves.

this is one of the situations where I like both songs well enough, which is not often the case.

King Kool Savas feat. Lumidee - Die besten Tage sind gezählt

(no comment on these ones...)
Gecko
Brandy and Monica - The Boy Is Mine
Ayman - Du bist mein Stern

It's practically the same song.

edit:
Hm. Personally I don't think My Immortal has the same melody as Colorblind. It "moves" differently, if that makes sense.
Linkin
Nickelback - Throw Yourself Away

Metallica - The Unnamend Feeling

Absolutely the same at the beginning of both songs...

it doesn't make sense laugh.gif wink.gif

IMHO, and to my ears, m.i. has nearly the same line of tones as c.b., only minimal changes have taken place.
let alone the mood it creates.
though m.i.'s melody is of course slower than colourblind. I think, while m.i. has a pretty even and stady rhythm, c.b. more tends be a bit faster at the beginning, and then gets a tiny bit slower (melody wise). you know? the basic melody that repeats on and on?

But you're not talking about sampling, are you? Then there are several thousand songs that could be listed.

BTW, the hookline of this Kool Savas song (he doesn't add the "King" anymore) is from Adina Howard's "Freak Like Me", which the younger ones will probably only know from the Sugababes; it's been sampled a lot.

Dandy Warhols - Bohemian like you
Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar.

i'm pretty sure it's homage rather than plagiarism to be honest, especially when you juxtapose the songs.

hmm... this one's just totally obvious:

John Williams - Star wars score
Gustav Holst - The planets

john williams is nothing more than a clip-artist. the bits he writes himself are so awful i wish he'd stolen them too. why does hollywood love this man?

Stealing, Sampling and Quoting music from other artists has a long tradition.

hrm... I'm not to sure what you mean by sampling here. the only meanings I now for sampling would be someting about short parts of songs (a sample) and the samplerate... some smart guys might have guessed by now that english isn't my first language ( rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif )
if you talking about covering (as we call in in germany, roughly translated) - like:
Talk Talk - it's my life, and --> No doubt - it's my life... no, that's not what I mean.

Titanic soundtrack
&
Michael W. Smith's album "Freedom"

Whenever I listen to MWS's instrumental album "Freedom", I am reminded of the Titanic soundtrack. "Freedom" plays like a soundtrack, and since Titanic was released 3 years earlier, I can only assume that MWS borrowed many ideas from this hugely successful release.

Tracks #7 of both CDs ("Hard to Starboard" and "Freedom Battle") contain the most obvious similarities to my ears. Both use orchestra hits, snare drum, and similar tempos to build suspense/tension (there's not much difference between the "rat-a-tat-a-tat" of the Titanic snare and the "rat-a-tat" of the Freedom snare).

digga: sampling as in "Portishead - Glory Box" has a sample from "Isaac Hayes - Ike's Rap 2" and salt n pepa sampled pink floyd's "the wall".

it's a chunk directly taken from the original record. not re-performed or anything, but directly copied as in a CD rip (or more commonly a vinyl rip with perhaps some wiggy-wiggy).

i wouldn't call this ripping off, it's more re-contextualising somebody's work into your context. it can and is used to great artistic effect, almost like collage in audio.

if you want to hear samples galore, check "the avalanches - since i left you" (the album, not the song of the same name). it is ALL samples. the avalanches are just a bunch of guys with turntables smile.gif

I was recently learning to play (well, told to learn to play) Trampled Underfoot by Led Zeppelin. Although I had never heard the song before, something was awfully familiar, mostly in the vocals.

When I shared it with my enlightened guitarist, he told me the song I was talking about was Long Train Running by Doobie Brothers. He was right.. smile.gif

all right, thx for your patient explanation.
no, I'm definiatly not talking about sampling or covering here.

Depending on how you view it, Green Day's Basket Case follows a very similar chord progression to Pachebel's Canon in D. (Green Day does theirs in Eb). Even more so with Live's All Over You (during the verses).

Some may argue with me on this, but the chord progression and changes are pretty damn similar, even though the style is almost completely different.

Part of the chorus in U2's "Beautiful Day" sounds like the chorus to A-Ha's "The Sun Always Shines On TV"

Oh yeah, the not-so-well-known-outside-Canada band Matthew Good Band ("Indestructible"), got a riff "lifted" by the Simple Minds ("Cry"). I wonder if MGB got writing credits.

Boston - More than a Feeling
Everlast - What it's like

_ _ - ' - (...) --> 'tonal height' and melody of the notes in "more than a feeling"

_ _ - ' - ' - _ (...) ---> 'tonal height' and melody of the notes in "what it's like"

(the higher the signs, the higher the tone... obviously I don't got a clue about notes at all, please forgive my noobish atempt in this matter tongue.gif )

if you listen to the first 15 sec. of Boston's song, and then compare the relevant parts to the base melody of Everlast's, there is a stunning feeling of dejavue.
though the melody in "what it's like" is different after the first five tones, it still sounds very familiar.
