QUOTE(Jack Comics @ Apr 19 2004, 09:23 PM)
Is there any particular reason *why* Linux must be used?

Taste?

Some people simply prefer one OS over the other, or want the option to use whichever OS suits the job best.

Yes, but my point here is... Linux doesn't seem to be getting the job done at all, thus it's obviously not suiting the job best. Of course, personal preference might be the case here and Frank might just like fighting with Linux and tinkering to get it to work correctly. If that's the case, fine. I thought I'd just point out what I see to be the simplest solution to the problem, just in case it missed everyone else. You may take it or leave it. wink.gif

I have to agree with xmixahlx. Debian is rock solid and it didn't take me long at all to get it fully configured AND stable.

Does Debian taste like chicken?

And how about M$ products? Caviar?

My personal experience with Debian is that it is both stable and reliable.

Let's start a funding to send a Linux troubleshooter to Frank smile.gif

Do they sell those at Wal-Mart?

Lets see-round trip flight from where ever to Germany-800-1500 us dollars+top flight linux trouble shooter at 200-300 us dollars per hour-figure a minimum of 8 hours of troubleshooting-1600-2400 us dollars-plus food and expenses-300-1000 us dollars-the fund needs about 4000.00 us dollars to be viable. Plus, who will be the in person trouble shooter?

For MPC to have a glorious future (the future it well deserves) further development must obviously be crossplatform, with development and eventually new binaries on all major OS'es (this is adressed to both Windows-haters as well as Linux-haters).

Frank Klemm is having some problems with his current Linux-install. Sometimes shit happens. Such is life. But, ofcourse, NONE of us have EVER had any such problems on Windows, ehy....?!?

(But I must say I was also a bit surprised that he chose a combo of XP/SuSE instead of the (as far as I can remember) originally intended setup of w2k/Debian. I myself are currently running XP, but as fast as I can afford some new hardware I'm gonna tear my machine down, and then I'm a'gonna build me a w2k/Debian dualboot box. XP has been a friggin' pain in the #@!!&$$¤!!....)

I personally use Win2k + Libranet (which is essentially Debian for newbies)

Very few problems with either of them.

personally i'd choose gentoo.

it is not that hard to install and with an stage3 (precompiled for a specific architecture like pentium3, pentium4, athlon-xp,..) it takes usally about 4 hours to compile.
With the BSD like package management it's a breeze to install/upgrade software.

It will also give you the decision to choose the kernel _you_ want (from vanilla through mm-tree to full patched gentoo release)

and the main reason for me: it just works with MY prefered software and services, and of corse: with prelinking enabled it's very fast.

but maybe frank would post his problems, maybe somebody can give an advice!

Why has this thread degenerated into a "which OS to choose" ?

About the partitions issue, i would keep my hands off any ntfs writing solution as it's just calling for more trouble. ntfs reading is ok though.

I must say that after getting Gentoo with 2.6.5 kernel to work, I'm very pleased with it. It took (me) long time to compile everything, becaus it was my second experiment with Linux installation. All those kernel settings almost drive me mad, but now it finaly works and quite fast smile.gif
