For perfect results (like crossfading with matching beats etc. - but not free + easy) use something like CoolEditPro (=Audition); I guess Audacity (free) can do the job as well.

The easiest way to do this I can think of is using foobar2000's diskwriter ("Single file output") with the crossfading DSP plugin that gives best results for you. For someone really clueless I'd use a separate installation of fb2k, remove all unnecessary features (DSPs, unneeded menue entries etc.) as far as possible and set up DSPs + Diskwriter settings as needed. Then you only have to open fb2k (e.g. from a desktop shortcut), drag'n'drop the files you want to join to playlist, sort them (if necessary) using drag'n'drop, highlight them and use rightclick -> Convert ...

Another free way; the sound processing in EAC ("Tools->Process WAV").
If you don't know about EAC you can grab it at:

its a shame she has been using Audacity for a while now and created a funky track but it keeps crashing when she hits the fade in or out effects.....

might try cool edit pro
