According to the installer:

What's new in QuickTime 6.5.1
QuickTime 6.5.1 delivers many important updates, including:
• Significant improvements to AAC encoding, resulting in high-quality sound over a full range of audio frequencies.

This is in addition to the "lossless" encoder. Does anyone know what they did to improve the encoding?

Firts thing to do is bit compare old and new Quicktime encondings. Those marketing talk won't tell realy anything important.

high-quality sound over a full range of audio frequencies.

What does that mean? "Tonal purity" with Apple AAC? wink.gif

64 Kb/s mode finally uses short blocks smile.gif This sometimes improves and somethimes makes sound worse - but at least it works like all other non-Dolby AAC encoders at that bit rate smile.gif

Check this thread/post for more informations. Apparently they allow more high frequencies in the new encoder.

I wonder if they're going to re encode their entire iTMS music library with the new encoder tongue.gif

Apple's Quicktime page. It is mentioned as the last item under "What's New In Quicktime 6.5?"

It appears when you select export to Quicktime movie, instead of MPEG4.
