is there a non-portable, flac-reading "cd" player for HOME use on the american market anywhere?

what i'm wanting is a player that can read either cd-r or dvd discs i make myself full of flac files and play these over my receiver in my den.

i don't want to hook up my portable player.

i cannot seem to find anyything out there that fits the bill.

am i expecting too much?

There are no standalone FLAC CD players that I know of. Maybe you would be better served by the Squeezebox. It can play FLAC files from your computer and stream them to your stereo.

thanks for writing.

it appears to me that this device converts .flac data on the fly to .mp3. wouldn't i be listening to compressed waves then over my klipsch speakers?

maybe i didn't read the literature right?

You can choose whether to simply decode the flac to raw or convert to mp3 for the squeezebox. The latter might be useful on a low-capacity network like 802.11b.

802.11b has enough bandwidth for FLAC or PCM CD-quality audio.

The ReQuest boxes box might play FLAC from CD, I know some play FLAC from the internal hard drive.

Yes, I know and I do stream PCM over 802.11b. The "might" in my post refers to the finicky nature of interference and wireless networks. If someone asks you if they can stream PCM audio on their 802.11b network the answer is a resounding "maybe."

I have not encountered that problem, but if absolutely necessary, one could connect a Squeezebox via cabling.

Another option is just to opt for the wired version of the Squeezebox, and if you have an 802.11g network, use an 802.11g to ethernet bridge device...

I think this PhatNoise player is just what you're looking for.
