In M/S stereo, why are L+R/(the square root 2) & L-R/(the square root 2) instead of L+R/2 & L-R/2 ?

If we use L+R/2 & L-R/2, in decoder we only do M+L & M-L without "/ (the square root 2)".

I think that it is easier.

Good question, I have no answer.
In AAC the sqrt is removed

To preserve total energy, I guess.
