Full Version: Burn Original CDs from FLAC Track Files?
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Lossless Audio Compression > FLAC

Hi. I’m looking for some guidance on burning an archived CD from FLAC files

PREAMBLE
Here’s what I am working to achieve:
Lossless archival/playback of 400+ CDs with additional Lossy encodes for portable player (Nomad Zen)

SETUP
I am ripping separate tracks to FLAC primarily for playback flexibility:
1. Ability to organize with playlists, shuffle, etc.
2. Ease of Streaming
3. Song Tagging
I have EAC remove leading and trailing silent blocks which I find preferential for most playback situations

QUESTION
""""""""""""
I would like to burn a CD from the separate FLAC files that:
1. Plays as the original
2. Adds CD-Text
3. Allows CDdb/Freedb recognition (think WMP9)
""""""""""""

THANKS
I've only been at this for a few days and this is my first post, so I apologize in advance for any misconceptions on my part. I can see that this is a very talented and dedicated community and I feel privileged to be able to participate.

I'm trying to not overcomplicate this question so please see my next post (#2!) about FLAC sizes if you are interested in giving me even more help. Thanks in advance.

If you use Nero you find a FLAC plugin here.

Or you could take a look at burnatonce or burrrn! They both support FLAC files and CD-text.
burnatonce had CDDB support in the previous version, but it was removed in the latest release because it needed som fixing. Not sure when it comes to burrrn...

Try them out! biggrin.gif

Thanks Solaris. I was already trying out burrrn but I had not looked into burnatonce. When I did, I was able to find more about how CDDB actually works and now I think I understand my difficulty.

MY NEW FOUND UNDERSTANDING OF CDDB
CDDB uses the track profile (# of tracks, length of each track, starting time on CD, etc.) to 'fingerprint' the CD and figure out what it is. I thought that it was some extra information (like the ISRC catalog # or something) that it was looking up, but it isn’t!

So I have been using EAC's "remove leading and trailing silent blocks" option which is akin to (however not as precise as) wavtrim on my files before they are encoded. Thus, there is no way in heck they will burn back to CD with the same track 'fingerprint' for CDDB to recognize, they simply don't have the same track length.

NEW QUESTION
""""""""""""""""""
Is there anyway to use wavtrim (or similar tool) to trim the silence, output a file saying where the silence is, and then use that information to pad silence back in before burning. (Can silence be arbitrarily added in TOCs?)

Is my reasoning correct? If I pad the tracks again and have appropriate pregap/index information I should be able to create a CDDB recognizable burn from separate track flac files?
""""""""""""""""""

Thanks again for any insight.
