Full Version: [DOUBLEPOST] Monkey's Audio v3.99

I'm a little surprised to see so little agitation around Monkey's Audio new release. Especially because it's been some 21 months since the last upgrade, as
this version history page on monkeysaudio.com mentions (ignoring the May 2003 v3.98 alpha 1), and because of APE's popularity on this forum.

The new features list doesn't look that impressive
QUOTE

  • Decoding engine better at handling corrupt streams / loss of internet connection while playing.

  • Simplified assembly code building for 3rd party developers.

  • Improved entropy coder for increased compression.
or am I underestimating this? Hans Heijden's lossless codecs comparison site seems to indicate that the new insane mode offers very negligible compression gain, while encoding/decoding occurs almost 3 times slower than in extra high mode. Consequently, I suppose streamability and seekability won't benefit much from insane encoded files.

So I guess the biggest advantage is the better error decoding. Has anyone had the chance to put that to the test?

Any other thoughts?
Peter
