the vorbis comments tagging system is superb. i would like to make use of it, but i have all my audio as mp3 and do not want to change that because of compatibility. i'd like to put my mp3 audio into vorbis containers so that i get the better tagging system.

the catch is that i have an mp3 player that doesn't support ogg vorbis. if i'm not mistaken, i'd have to pull the mp3 audio out from the vorbis container before putting them on the portable, right?

what i'm worried about is that it will take a long time to strip the ogg. it's a flash player, so it's not like i could synch my ipod once every few weeks; i have to refill it every few days, and i don't want to have to add too much time to the process with the ogg stripping.

also, they're working on adding ogg vorbis support via a firmware upgrade. so if they do that, it will support both mp3 and ogg vorbis... could i then play mp3 audio from inside an ogg container without having to extract the audio from the container? will the player be smart enough to know what to do?

so, with all of this in mind, what are my options?

No.

1. Ogg is the container for Vorbis - not the other way around.
2. The tagging is done in the Vorbis stream - not at the container level.
3. Use APE tags together with id3 v1.1 or v2, then you have the same functionality and can also play them in your portable
