Hi ppl,

what do you ppl think, is there a need for a minimal preset, that suits needs of car audio systems, pc stereos etc...

Minimum quality at ~128kbps.

-V5 --athaa-sensitivity 1

seems to give some reasonable results.

We have

--preset insane, extreme, standard, medium...
why not "minimum"?

-preset 128 already does this, right?
Squeller
No. At least it doesnt do athaa-sens -1, see presets.c in the lame source
echo
Maybe it would be simpler to include --athaa-sensitivity 1 in -V5 and not create another preset.

no, abr and vbr are different things and yes, it would be a good idea to have such a preset

No i mean I thought preset 128 already gave the best quality at ~128k. I was under the impression that the decision to stick to be ABR was because it performed better at that range.

Has this changed?

It seems (theres some testing in the lsitening test forum) athaa-1 outperforms abr128 in quality. In encoding speed, its quite slower. But the aim of the presets is quality. a-s-1 seems to be top choice at bitrates with an approximate average of 128 kbps

I'd be very interested in such a preset. In fact, I've been trawling the web for some time trying to search out such a thing with little success sad.gif (Why does everyone dis a-p-medium?) Needless to say, my level of knowledge of the switches available is not sufficient to work it out for myself!

(Is -V5 --athaa-sensitivity 1 a complete set of switches? I might try it out...)

Hope this thread gets lots of support biggrin.gif

We are obviously talking about 3.90.x --alt-preset 128 and 3.96 -V5 --athaa-sensitivity 1. The two settings IMHO are comparable in quality, both have their own problems and advantages. Overall results (only 3 listeners crying.gif) seem to prefer the VBR setting. Your musical tastes or your capacity to perceive high frequencies could be determinant for a right choice.
