Anybody know a site which has information on the history of mp3? I've found some sites, but they seem not to be too good. What was mp3 format intented for from the beginning? Somebody told me it was meant for pop music, but that sounds less believable...

ok.. maybe am not have looked very closely.. but from what this pages
(both adresses...) can offer..: none of them revial the very essence of mp3...

what was the purpose to develop.. pcm/raw compression..??
and for what use...??

you have to realy wonder.. what`s going on.. ex..
when ppl. on a mp3 board.. are saying..

"am a big fan off mp3.. but i wan`t to compress the songs for storage..

ASPEC is the mother of MP3, and together with parts of MUSICAM it was developped to MP3

well... the article barely touch the "birth".. but more informative than the fhg shite...

if someone remember.. the fhg institute.. did not do the original work.
but..but they where on the other hand..the biggest developers off the format as we
know it today..

the original idea.. was to develop a compression algoritm that should be used to
make it easyer in music production.. as the "home studio" made it`s
importance..

From that point.. the format was a sucess.. also on the comercial market....

Mp2 evolved from Musicam, and MP3 evolved mainly from OCF-1.

The specific goal of mp3 was to be able to stream music over 2 isdn channels (ie 2*64kbps). This is where the 128kbps target comes from.

the thing i was trying to point out.. was that the compression.. was.. aming towards
the communety of sharing recordings (as of industry.).rather than
offering the masses a easy way to get music..

Huh? You can't stream at the exact speed of the connection... what about packet overhead, congestion, delays, etc?

Lucky to stream at 96k over 128kbps connection... maybe if traffic is light and you buffer about 90 sec. first...

IIRC, ISDN is very stable, so you don't have those problems really. Protocol overhead goes into a seperate channel and such.
