has there been any discussion about encoding comedy? ie, live performances...

i have a bill cosby live perf that's hovering just below 256kbps with APS that would be *nice* to have down around 192 or so (and still be transparent) and was wondering if there's been any posts on this. i searched for comedy but most posts didn't look like they pertained. a note would be that this performance sounds like there's a HUGE audience, so maybe the applause is making life difficult for the encoder...

HowTo reduce LAME VBR Bitrate Bloat:
(in order of personal preference)

1. Append -Y
2. LAME >3.94: Try a lower -V value (or --[alt-]preset medium)
3. Lower --lowpass
4. Use WaveGain before encoding and use the suggested --scale value

I did my Dane Cook CD at q3 aotuv Vorbis...

Seriously, it's just voice... quality doesn't matter, the message does.

i really like vorbis (hell, i even started to encode with it) but there's just not enough hardware support out there... i guess i'll have to play around with -V values when i have the time...

a monty python autobiography (audio, interview, comedy clips, sketches) i encoded with musepack --radio spits out a 58kbps comedy file

so i guess my point is... check if musepack is an option... if so it's probably worth using

I agree. For spoken comedy, I routinely use the following:

--preset cbr 96 -m m

You probably meant increasing the V-value, right ?
