Hello,

I'm relatively new to the MP3 scene and have a question-

Should I use Joint Stereo instead of Stereo with LAME 3.90.3 that I just downloaded from here?

I read at another audio site that said with the release of LAME 3.91, Joint Stereo mode is preferred over Stereo, so don't use the joint stereo switch with any other CODEC; only LAME 3.91 (and above).

So, even though the preferred version of LAME recommended here is 3.90.3 and NOT 3.91 and above, should I still use Joint Stereo instead of Stereo? Is that other site wrong?

Thanks.

Joint stereo is preferred over stereo with LAME. It is recommended to use the alt-presets without any modifications. All presets use joint stereo.

In the future, use the search function as this has been discussed before.

By the way, welcome to HA!

I'm not sure about the state of the Joint Stereo code in 3.90.3, but in general, Joint Stereo "Just Makes Sense" ™, just like VBR. I suggest you encode a few samples that really use the stereo field and see how they do in Stereo vs. Joint Stereo.

LAME 3.96 is the latest stable LAME version, and you might have better results with it.

since the presets of 3.90.3 use joint-stereo, it can be asumed that joint-stereo gives better results that stereo with 3.90.3.

BTW: take a look at the FAQ-link at the top...... the mp3-section of it..... will probably also answer many other similiar questions which you may have.
