Hi Im looking to buy an external USB soundcard to use with a PIII 700 laptop I have as an audio server. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with the M-Audio Transit?

I have good experience with all functions - digital out, line out, line in. A competent device; you won't go wrong with it.

I own one and am quite pleased with it. Although it would probably better if I hooked it up to a digital receiver, I don't have any complaints about it.

For the pricepoint it's hard to beat the Transit (certainly leagues better than the onboard audio of any laptop I have heard).

I use the Transit with a Xintech SuperDual and Etymotic ER4Ps and it's a wonderful sounding setup.

I have one as well, working smoothly on a low end machine (USB 1.0 port, Celeron 333 Mhz Laptop).

Only time you have an issue with a USB1 machine is if you want to use 96khkz on input output, then you have to pick input or output.

It's a USB 1 device, so input/output only at 24/96 even if connected to a USB 2 port.

Really I could have swornI read somewhere that it's a limitation on USB1, but I've never tried it with USB2, so can't say. No biggie anyway....for the money this cards great (even better with an external amp, this is what I use at work and I LOVE it). Another note, this card also works with OSX.....now if someone would make Linux drivers I'd be a happy camper.

Bought the transit. Sound is pretty good - better via optical out to my DAC. Problem is the occasional glitch in playback. Usually one per song. This is annoying and not something i can put up with. sad.gif Its a pIII 700 laptop. (could probably use fresh windows install maybe) IM surprised it cant cope with it as its not being used for anything else. Anyone got any ideas? Think its the buffer running out in winamp? But ive already put this pretty high. Ive tried foobar, but it doesnt seem to run very smoothly on my laptop (to be fair might be the laptops fault as the windows 98 has been on there sometime) and locks up quite frequently.

What an excellent excuse to go to WK2Pro, XP, or 2003 smile.gif
It always sounds like a lot of effort, but it isnt really.... go on... smile.gif

XP - err no thanks. I should re-build it - but im just lazy (I do it all day at work). smile.gif It should really be working as its the only app running. Perhaps i just have to mess around with the settings.

What kind of output method are you using? Supposedly for win9x WaveOut is the best method.
Rotellian
Yep tried waveout and directsound. Both give same result. A CPU usage prog gives the usage no higher than 25% when playing audio. The Asio driver ive just installed i havent tested much, but it gives nasty noises through the output at times. Im assuming ASIO will be best? Will setting the soundcard latency high/low make any difference?

ASIO is supposed to sound better, but to be honest I haven't seen much if any difference. I use DirectSound 2.0. I have fewer problems with glitches, and it sounds fantastic to my ear.

Yeah, I wouldn't use the ASIO output if I were you. It has nasty hisses and cracks even at very high output latency. I use DirectSound 2.0 and it gives the best results for me. If you have a newer version of windows available try and install that, as Win 2000/XP is better suited for DirectSound output and it might solve your problems. Good luck.

Hi there,
after trying to play with the guitar-rig software on my laptop i found
the transit card, which would also be a great solution for me.
I also found a page with a description how to run this card with linux/alsa

Hello.
I figured I'd reply to this post instead of starting a new one because it goes along with the thread title. Hope some people still read this a maybe have a few pointers.

I purchased the Transit a few days ago so I could mix down some tracks from my Fostex 4-track using optical. I have yet to get the thing working.

The drivers installed correctly, I changed my default XP sound settings to Transit, changed the device settings in Adobe Audition 1.0 to Transit, but I still cannot get any incoming audio. I tried using line with a headset mic, a dynamic mic, a condenser mic (with multiple adapters blink.gif ), and my guitar with no results.

I then tried the optical connection between my Fostex and the Transit, but the Fostex reports there is nothing on the other end.

I then did all the above with different settings in the Transit control panel as well.

I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?
CSMR
I don't see how the Fostex could know whether there is anything on the other end or not. To state the obvious - you have the right inputs and outputs? Line and optical in are on the same minijack input. Secondly, on the Volume control, check that Line/Mic in isn't muted. Then if Adobe still doesn't work see if it works with other software with line or optical in - e.g. MSN Messenger Tools ->Audio/Video tuning wizard.

OK. I feel like a complete idiot.
As soon as I read your reply that the optical/line in where the same, I said "Oh God." Yes, after looking at the little arrows (you know the ones signifying input and output) I realized I was using the wrong ones.

I am the model for jackass mistakes with this one.

Thank you
PS: yes, the transit works beautifully.
CSMR
No problem. It happens!

I just got this card the other day because I wanted a portable recording solution and to replace my Audigy 2. So far it seems to be a great card and I'm sitting here wondering why I haven't gotten rid of my Audigy 2 sooner... tongue.gif
