1. How do i get the lame dos box to be "on top" of eac when eac calls for it.

2. Since im a newbie, whats better rip the song as a wav file with eac then use razorlame to convert then use mp3gain or Rip song with eac to a mp3, then use mp3gain?

3. whats the best compression setting to use for listing to mp3s on my mp3player.
(Best sounding mp3 with the least amount of space)?

Thanks

1) Click the title bar of the dos box

2) EAC only rips to wave. However, you can configure it to call the encoder of your choice. The downside is that most people delete the wavs after encoding, so if there is an error, you have to go back and re-rip or whatever.

3) only for you to decide. the standard preset is considered by most to be transparent, but this is probably over kill for a portable. maybe try --preset medium

1). Ok, gotcha on that, but I think it would be nice if the author of EAC would somehow make that an option to have that box pop up "on top".

2).Sorry for the misunderstanding. But i am using lame as the external encoder right now. Seems like i read somewhere here, that someone was ripping as a wave then using razorlame to convert.

So my orginal question holds, is there much difference in
1. eac rip to wav, use razorlame to convert to mp3, use mp3gain
or
2. eac rip to mp3 using lame, then use mp3gain

Thanks

1) Is there really that much concern over where the dos box pops up? It's only a mouse click away.

2) EAC passes wav's to the respective encoders.

3) If you use the same encoder settings, you will end up with identical mp3's. One is not better than the other, as both are essentially frontends for lame.exe. The bonus to using EAC is tagging.

I searched half an hour for an answer to my question and couldn't find it so I ask my question here cause the subject reads Questions....

I have a friend from whom I'd like to receive some songs via internet. For instance I want 'Work It' from Missy Elliott. My friend doesn't use EAC and will never use it. My question is if he sends the song in uncompressed wav format and/or in a lossless form is it possible for me after receiving the file to encode the file with EAC and Lame to a mp3. I can rip cd's to lame mp3's with EAC but I can't find an option where you can manually insert wav files and let EAC/lame encode them.

I hope this is possible because EAC rips a song into a wav file before letting lame encode.

Simply press ALT+V or choose the operation 'Compress WAVs...' at the 'Tools'-menu.
You have to set the right encoder etc. at EAC>Compression Options (or hit F11) of course, but as you have often done this before with some of your own rips I guess you are aware of that.

I searched half an hour on this forum after I spend five minutes looking through EAC be able to encode wavs. That's 35 minutes rolleyes.gif

And if he sends me lossless files I just unpack them to wavs and encode away?

Yes, but in that case you may want to use foobar2000 and its diskwriter - fb2k makes it a 2-click job to transcode from one format (also WAV) to another while keeping the tags. Even if you do not like fb2k for playback you may want to consider using it for transcoding - even large mass-transcoding jobs are just 2 clicks away.
