Well, the title and its description say it all. smile.gif I just read about this new mobilephone and I'd like to know whether you can play Vorbis files with it. I'm quite sure it won't support it natively but are there possibilities to install some software player to allow me playing Vorbis files?

cheers
JohnV
It's not a Symbian phone and it has a very limited memory capasity (not possible to expand).
In principle some Java player could play Vorbis though. But since Vorbis is pretty heavy on cpu and java isn't very efficient, I think there isn't going to be one..

thanks for that bad news wink.gif

If you want Vorbis on the go - use a P900 with a 128 meg duo card and have the files encoded with aotuv at around 64kbps. It is perfectly good for using on the go and you can get about 5 hours of music.

I accept that 64kbps is not the best in terms of quality but any artifacts or loss of quality is overridden by the background noises of being on the go.

In my opinion, 64kbps aotuv has noises and artifacts that are not unpleasant anyway.

The P900 is the cheif when it comes to mobile technology too!

I'd go for Siemens SX1 and 512/1GB MMC. It's clearly smaller/lighter than P900 and you can use Symbian players in it. Sound quality is pretty decent too.

The same applies to Nokia 3650, 3650, 6600, 7610, and maybe even N-Gage, and there's a new Sendo phone available with similar features. I read on NewLC that there's an official symbian decoder for ogg vorbis, Tremor based, and it works well on a 6600.
This page is the source of an open-sourced symbian player for symbian phones.

Sorry, but at least 6600 and 7610 and probably the 3650-series too only have mono-output. That is a serious issue for music listening...

I already thought about that, but when I had seen the price I quickly changed my mind... The P900 seems to be a nice toy but most features are unnecessary for me. sad.gif

P900 can use Symbian players too, as it uses the latest Symbian OS smile.gif

The best Vorbis player for Symbian phones are OggPlay!

All Symbian based Nokia phones have mono output, even the newest 7610, so that's not good for music.

The SE K700i does not support Vorbis, natively atleast. It supports MP3 and AAC out-of-the box, but has 41MB of memory, and no memorycard support (which is very very damn sad, cause it'd be the best non-symbian phone if it did).

I agree that the SX1 is a lovely tool with bags of features but the keypad is unusual to say the least. The P900 keypad is nice to the touch and very responsive.

The P900 is well pricey and does have its quirks but the sound quality is excellent and the battery power is brilliant. The worse thing about the P900 is the restriction of memory card size - max of 128 meg per card.

I also tried the Handspring Treo 600 with a 256 meg SD card - avoid this like the plague as there is a huge amount of background hiss in many models and the sound quality is poor - even taking into account the background noises of being on the go. The volume is also too low.

I also considered Knokias (ha ha) but the mono output and lack of support for SD let me down.

Try ebay for a P900 - there are good deals to be had.

Good luck!

I've had SX1 a few months, and yes the number keys need some time to get used to, but after a while it's not a limiting factor by any means.
I'd say P900's 128MB max memory is much more a limiting factor for music listening.. wink.gif

I take your point JohnV. Its horses for courses isnt it I suppose...

I have just found the Sendo X symbian phone. It seems like it will be the answer in terms of having a more standardised keypad without storage limitations.

Details of it are on the Expansys website.

JohnV - the sendo X uses symbian series 60.... what is the name of the ogg vorbis player that you use on this platform? Do you think it will work on the sendo?

I've got a P900 and the 128 stick is limiting although the sound is very good, especially when used with good headphones. I have to carry several 128 sticks with me for Films and mp3 etc. A 512 SD card would be so much better.

I'm going to convert my mp3's to Ogg Vorbis c. 64k as mentioned to conserve space. What's the best way to go around this and preserve as much quality? (even though transcoding will affect this)

PS. If you can wait you might want to consider the S700 (due Q4) or P900 replacement. I'm hoping the S700 can at least use Duo Pro as well as standard duo sticks.
