I just downloaded and installed the latest Winamp 2 update from Peter's Page

Beside the common updates of the plugins it installs RAR v3.x decompression support ???
Couldn't find any information about it in a 'readme' or somewhere else!

I really don't know what it is for. I tried to put some mp3's into a rar file and to play it with Winamp (I guess that was a very silly, dumb and useless thing), but obviously it didn't work!

Is it just for Skins compressed to a RAR file? Any ideas? :ponder:

[EDIT] Of course i know what RAR v3.x decompression support is generally, but i don't know what it is for in Winamp

it's for mods/midis/spcs and similar. doesn't work with mp3s/oggs (oggs used to work at some point, but it's disabled in latest in_vorbis).
this feature has been in Winamp setup for months, it's just been updated to support rar v3.x.

actrually you can get a pluginf for winamp 2x that extrax a audio file from a .rar or .zip file and plays it

i compressed all my .aac files with winrar 3.0 as it removes 6% of the .aac file

Doesn't that ,considerably, slow down the decoding part??The reduction is good, but smooth playback is better smile.gif

If it's possible to squeeze 6% off the filesize of aac files, why wasn't this extra compression incorporated into the file format itself? You gain an extra 6% "for free" (ie no further loss in quality).

In a quick test I just did (not a particularly good one - they were different songs) rar'ing mp3s, oggs, and mpcs only saved a tiny amount of space, whereas rar'ing aacs saevd about 2%.
