Full Version: Active Topics [More . . .]

I apologize in advance if this is being worked on right now, but in case no one has reported this yet; I use IE6, and after the switch to the new Forum software, when I click on "More . . ." at the bottom of the Active Topics section on the Portal page, it only displays a blank page with no pictures or text. I was wondering if it's just me or if other people are having the same problem.

Also, if there is a preferred or recommended browser (preferably a free one for Windows) to access HA other than IE6, could someone please let me know? IE6 is very popular, but is it 100% compatible with HA?
Jan S.
[rant]IE is not compatible with the standards. Use a decent browser like firefox or mozilla[/rant]

But what you describe should not happen.
Anyone else has this?

OK, I'm ready to switch to a more compatible browser. Which one would you say is the lightest (the least bloated) of all?
Jan S.
firefox.

Well, I tried a few more times with IE6, and it sometimes says:
QUOTE
Sorry, but we did not find any matches to display. Try again and broaden your search criteria. If you were searching for new posts since your last visit, it's possible that there are none to show.
and sometimes a blank page comes up (in case admins want to investigate).

Right now, I'm downloading Firefox smile.gif

firefox no dougbt ...

Just don't ever try downloading nightlies if you try Firefox. They used to be quasi-stable. Now the Mozilla guys are having problems getting the major releases right.

Edit: I take that back; recent nightlies rock.

The part about not finding searches is probably because you are not logged in when you are clicking on this link. Am I right?

As for the blank page, this has to be something to do with redirecting I think. There may be something I can try on this end, but before I do that I'm curious as to whether other IE users are experiencing this or not (the blank page that is).

Anyone care to comment?

Also, do you happen to be using any sort of firewall/proxy/etc. type thing that might interfere with your browsing?

I use Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633 with SP1, Q818529, Q330994, Q828750, Q824145, Q832894, Q837009, and Q831167 updates (Windows Update).

No problem with the "more..." link of the portal. I always use it.

PS : I use Kerio personal firewall, and hydrogenaudio.org is listed as "always authorize" in the security settings of IE.

i am using firefox, and when i click "more" for example on the portal-page while not being logged in, i get a login page, telling me that i need to log in to use the search function.

Does that make sense, that a visitor needs to be logged in to use the "more..." feature?

Yep, thats the way its configured at the moment. A visitor can't view active posts, which is what the "More..." button takes you to.

One more thing regarding the active topics page: I bookmark this page rather than the portals front page, but now it doesn't work so well anymore. The next day the link doesn't work anymore. Says "Sorry, but we did not find any matches to display." So there is no point in bookmarking this page if I would have to update it every day.
LoFiYo
Yes, I have two ways to get on the Internet. One is through a firewall, and the other one is a dial-up. When I try the firewall connection, it gives me a blank page. When I go through the dial-up, it works. So there must be something in the firewall that's blocking something. So it's not a problem on your end.

About browser differences, I downloaded Firefox, and tried it, but I experienced the exact same problem. The problem was with the firewall.

Also, I now know that I have to be logged in to see More active topics.

Thanks for your advise tongue.gif

Bump.

No easy way to go back to the old behaviour here? I really liked the active topics page better in my bookmarks.

There shouldn't be any problem book marking the active-topics page, as long as you use the right bookmark. You need to bookmark the actual original link, not the page that you are taken to when you click on the link. This is due to the way the redirect system works.

So bookmark this link:

CODE

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?act=search&CODE=getnew&active=1&compliment=1&lastdate=259200&activeforums=17,28,27,29,33,34,39,41,42,44,43,45,49,46,50,53,52,26

Note that the system will require you to be logged in when you visit that link, so you should probably set the system to keep you logged in permanently if that is the first page you visit for HA.

There's a cookie issue too
You may be logged on http://hydrogenaudio.org
But clicking on any links leads you to http://www.hydrogenaudio.org which will use another cookie and logs you out

A admin should check out the cookie settings and change the domain to .hydrogenaudio.org

Hi!

I haven't any firewall, my provider uses transparent proxy and I haven't problems like that with other sites, but hydrogenaudio.
IE6. I think an advise to use another browser is most incorrect in spite of it may be working. There is not perfect browser, while one like some standarts, other likes others standarts. I found IE very handy.

This is not entirely true. Some browsers are basically standards compliant and some are not.

IE definitely falls into the second category.

There is a reason why it is called standards, that is because they should be globally valid.

The notion of some standards and other standards breaks the whole idea of a standard beeing there in the first place.

So, i have a questions. Which specifications we must consider as a standart?
IE has widely distribution than others, can we consider IE specification as "more" standart? It will be more logically.

A standard for me is:
1. Elaborated (best in cooperation with several companies/organizations)
2. Documented to the public
3. Officially proclaimed/(accepted?) as such

These are the points I consider when thinking about standards. Now you can reproduce my point of view about MS "standards".

I've found where the "more..." problem is.
I have Reget software installed.
And when I am switching from "low level" to "basic" mode all going right.

I would like to thank Jan S., kwanbis and Canar for their Firefox recommendation. A major improvemnet over IE!
