After reading the FAQ (no DSP plugins except volume control). I get almost double the CPU usage when I change the current playing song (or start playing anything).
any ideas?

Any 3rd party plugins? Have you tried a clean normal install (perhaps even a minimal one)?

When you start playing a song the CPU usage will be higher as the file needs opening and buffer has to fill up etc. After that you should get normal CPU usage.
PS. You really could do with explaining the problem in a bit more detail.
