Why does every one suggest that you rip with EAC and then use LAME with a Front end to encode? I use EAC and just let it encode using the LAME.EXE. I do this so I have nice ID3 tags that my mp3 player reads. Is there some quality issues that I do not know of associated with this?

Never heard of it! :listen:
Tell us who claimed it so that we could start a :flamewar: !

EDIT: The only issue i know of is that it could result in a missing VBR-header with a chance of 1:1,000,000 if you have 'additionally write id3 v2' enabled. But this won't affect quality at least.

I've read it a couple of times on this forum.

Sounds like you wanna get the boxing gloves on smile.gif

Take it easy boys. Nobody's forcing you to use a frontend, so there's no need to start up an argument over such a trivial subject. Some people, including me, simply like to rip a whole batch of *.wav files from numerous CDs before encoding. Having a front-end where you can load all those *.wav files and do a batch encoding (like before going to bed, work, etc.) is sometimes more convenient than waiting for EAC to encode each song one at a time. Do whatever you want and let this subject go. Let it go. :lurk:

I personally don't use tags - I just use a good logical way of naming the files I'm encoding. I feel a filename fills the needs of identifying music. Just keep the naming constant. There are plenty of renaming suites to cater for your needs shoul you need to (yuck!) tag the files, or rename the files in another format.

The only problem I have found is that when I'm trying to burn especially long file names (like "Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (Dawn To Dusk) Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (Dawn To Dusk) - 05 - Here Is No Why.mpc"), some CDR formats do not support it (hence me RAR'ing it first and then writing it).

So - make your own choice. From my point of view, I'd like to think I could find any one of my aerosmith songs simply using the "find | grep aerosmith" command (linux).

No :flamewar: ! Just because a lot of people don't know, EAC has got kind of a batch processing, too!
Just a statement out of this thread

Another dirty solution is to do it with EAC and compression in the backround as campari212 mentioned before.
Did you know that since EAC 0.9beta you can close EAC and run it again later on, it will remember all the compression tasks it has to do.
So you could just rip all your stuff during the day, while EAC will start encoding the first tracks, when you have finished ripping all your CDs just close EAC and run it again before you go to bed !

Hehe - I guess we posted at the same time, huh?

Because it's the only way to sleep if you have a big library of cd's to convert.
Ripping the day, encoding the night:D

Thanks for all the answers, but some of you guys need to understand sarcasm (eg, the boxing gloves comment)

I tried to get the EAC batch thing to work and I couldn't. If anyone can point out how to do this without too much hassle I would really appreciate it.

I read a few times as well that batch ripping and encoding was better, both here and at r3mix. There was some talk that letting Eac work with Lame at the same time might introduce errors but no proof was ever offered.

Monkeys audio frontend will also write your id3 tags for you in batch mode overnight based on the filenames. V1 anyway, which is all I use.

In [b]EAC Options
go onto the Tools Tab: Enable On extraction, start external... (Of course just 1 simultaneous compressor thread)
THAT'S IT !!!
When you're ripping several songs of a CD, EAC will compress in the backround while it will extract the next song. When you have finished extracting everything just close EAC. It doesen't matter that LAME is still encoding a file. When you want EAC to proceed with encoding the files that have already been extracted just start EAC again!

btw: did anybody notice that 'Use xx simulatenous laugh.gif external compressor threads' thing before?

Neat! I didn't know EAC saved its state like that.

Yeah, for those of us ripping and encoding CDs on our 8-way datacenter servers, now we can really take advantage of all that processor power. smile.gif

Lol, yep!
But the reason i was amused was the difference between
simulatenous <-> simultaneous
Thank God (and all the developers of LAME) that LAME doesn't create simulated mp3's !!! Fortunately they're real!

note: When you close EAC after ripping, don't shutdown right away. Wait a few minutes so Lame finishes encoding the current song. I noticed that if you shutdown while Lame is still encoding that song is screwed. This happened to me cause I had the " don't show external compressor window" checked, and forgot Lame was still open.
