Hi,
I need to renumber MP3 tags, it appears as a natural task to me and therefore I don't understand why I couldn't find a free application that can do it. The shareware Tag&Rename seem to do this the way it should be done but it's not free. How do you renumber your tags? Are there free tag libraries so I can write a tool myself? I would even install Linux if there is a killer MP3 application but that apps suck probably compared to Godfather & Co.

You can use the "Auto track number" feature of
foobar2000's masstagger, or the "Auto-numbering wizard" of
Mp3tag.
Both are freeware

the problem here is the play list view is not very helpful, imho there should be a ListView, I need to see the year tag, I didn't figure out how to modify the script for this

that seem to be indeed the best tagger currently, it's not obvious the alt key has to be used to reorder, I had to ask in the support forum. The problem with ID3 TagIt is the enumerate feature is unusable so no further testing is possible

I don't like that it can add 01, 02, 03 to file names just 1, 2, 3 etc.

What do you mean? You can add leading 0s using the $num() function.
