Full Version: SCF Clippings?

When encoding some of my music into MPC, the encoder gives me this warning:

QUOTE
There still occured 1 SCF clippings due to a restriction of StreamVersion 7.
Use the '--scale' method to avoid additional distortions. Note that this
file already has annoying distortions due to slovenly CD mastering.

What does this mean? I'm new to MPC, so I apologize if this is completely obvious. I've been searching around and I have found nothing on this.

I just want to get the best quality MPC file possible from my WAVs, is that so hard?! sad.gif

You should use mppenc.exe with the --xlevel switch to avoid internal clipping. This is the best you can do with SV7 encoders

You can still have clipping even if you use --xlevel.

Just another victim of the loudness race.

I guess there's nothing you can (or should) do in this case, until SV8 is released. Pumping up the bitrate by lifting the Q-level can in some cases reduce the clipping errors, while in others it doesn't.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Is there anything audible that I'm going to notice in the file because of this? And does anyone know when SV7.5 or 8 will be out?

No. 1 SCF means that one single sample (in 44100 per second) is clipped. This will hardly be noticable.

Also see mppenc's output:
CODE
...Note that this file already has annoying distortions due to slovenly CD mastering.

This means two things:
1.) The CD was probably mastered very loud. Possibly allready with clipping in the signal.
2.) In this loud mush you won't hear a single clipped sample.

sv8/1.95z67 is latest 7.15 SV that renders xlevel obsolete.

it's experimental, but it works

It's a design flaw of MPC. The scalefactors are usually within 0..63. If your source signal is very loud this scalefactor range might not cover all needed scalefactors. Since MPC codes the scalefactors via DPCM it's possible to code the scalefactors below zero for the subbands 2-32, though. By using the "xlevel" option you tell the encoder it's ok to use negative scalefactors. But older decoders might have problems with those files.

So, I suggest the following:
1) try xlevel. If this does not work then
2) downscale your source signal via WAVGain or something

bye,
Sebi
