Full Version: Convolver - any DSP removed?

Hi folks,

* Does foobar do any sort of DSP/filtering w/o DSP ad-ins (like EQ, volume control, or Convolver?)

* When convolver is added, but no impulse file loaded, does it do anything at all to the data?

* When an impulse file is loaded, is any sort of filtering/DSP removed or replaced? Or does convolver+ impulse just ADD (nothing is subracted)?

Does that question make sense? I guess I'm really just wondering if there's no DSP explicitly added in, is the data foobar send out exactly equivalent to what's written on the disk? Or is there some manipulation (i.e., sinc filtering) that is removed/replaced when, say, convolver is used?

Thanks,
Jim

If nothing is in the DSP chain nothing is done to the data.

When convolver is loaded, but no impulse, nothing will happen either.

If there's an impulse loadded obviously the data will be convolved with it - thats the goal of the convolver.

What's a convolver and why would I want one?

Thanks for the link, Garf. I wish everyone with a "Use the search" comment would enclose a link, or at the least suggest some search terms. I realize that for you old timers (and looking at your atavar, Garf, you're one of the oldest wink.gif ) it's boring seeing the same old subjects come up time and again, but sometimes the related search is not obvious.

Ok, I read through the thread and saw comments like I don't know how I ever did without this, but to me it was all mostly gobbledy-gook. My best guess at what it's for is so that you can add ambience effects?

I'm not trying to be dense here, but is this thing for a studio engineer that's creating music, for an end-user, or what? How would I know if I (a guy playing music on his computer) needed one?

Go to

and download some of the impulse files to get a feeling what it can do.

For example, I use it to emulate the parametric part of Shibatch SuperEq, that was dropped when Foobar graphic equalizer was made.
