Eli
I want to set up or pay for hosting/email. This will be used primarily for myself and imediate family. I have already puchased the domain and really want to set up an email server more then a site server.

Would there be a very EASY way for me to set this up and serve myself with a cable modem. I have also looked at some of the budget hosting companies but I dont like what they offer. My BW requirements should be very low, but I want alot more space for email storage and the ability to send reasonably large attachments. Also, alot of them seem to charge extra for subdomains (why is that?).

You could setup a basic version of Apache, and register with dyndns, assuming your ISP allows users to host their own web server (some do, some don't).

Setting up an email server is a bit more difficult though. The advantage to all of the above though is that it's free.

I personally use http://www.netherweb.com for my hosting. I know the CEO personally (my wife's cousin), though I'm hesitant to recommend them to you since they've had some uptime problems this year, some of which has turned me off since I rely on my email for work. This has lead me to seek another source for email, but I still use them for my webhosting needs.

I can't comment on setting up a server for yourself, but i can give you my host, multiwebspace. It's not that big, so service is great. The guy running it is very nice and if you have custom requirements you can contact him too. Maybe it's of some help for you.

I'm also looking for a good cheap webhost (under $4 per month). Anybody have any suggestions?

My requirements are:

PHP
MySQL
PhpMyAdmin
Email Account (POP or webmail)
FTP Access
> 200 MB webspace
> 4 GB Data Transfer

Well, $4 is really pushing it... so be realistic, and go for site5.com

They are the best host I've ever used, and their support is excellent.

Try them out, and check out their "Fantastico De Luxe" script installer (which is just spiffy).

I think www.surpasshosting.com is exactly what you are looking for.
