This release of version 1.0 of Vorbis hasn’t been rushed out because of everyone’s bitching about it taking so long? Everyone’s been talking about RC4 and now version 1.0 comes out.

Either that or I’m confused and version 1.0 isn’t out.

Someone lay my fears to rest!

I would prefer to think of it as a "pleasant surprise" for all of us who have been foaming at the mouth for 1.0. smile.gif

can we now do the bitrate peeling... is that what it's called... you know... making a 128 file a 64 one... that's what I was looking forward to.

Cheers,

This has been "supported" in the bitstream for quite awhile now I think. The problem is that there are no tools that really allow you to do this yet. Segher supposedly had a demonstration tool available awhile ago (don't know much about it), but there's no official vorbis tool to do peeling yet. I imagine that this will change fairly soon now though.

Ok good, as long as this isn't RC4 but it's being called V1.0 to make people happy.

I don't know what everyone's "complaining" about. RC stands for "Release Candidate," which means RC4 would have been the 4th potential candidate for a v1.0 release. The fact they decided and went gold is a good thing... how many release candidates do ya want? Better a 'real' release than some programs that get to v0.9 prebeta 994762345192... biggrin.gif

IIRC, v1.0 was supposed to be RC4, plus specifications/documentation and last min. bug fixes. It was said v1.0 should follow RC4 shortly.

Now it looks like the specifications/documentation part is ready or almost ready, and Monty is doing the last min. bug fixes the last few days. So why not go directly to v1.0?
