Somebody with html skills please make a decent page for WavPack!
WavPack is great but that page is VQF worth.

I've been trying to come up with something loosely based on rjamorim.com's home page.

Ah, there is a God after all...

I nearly barfed when I first saw the latest Wavpack page, but didn't have the heart to say anything. (Sorry David...) I considered having a crack at it myself, but I just don't have the free time to give Wavpack 4.0 the attention it deserves at the moment, either in a listening test sense or other forms of assistance.

I'd rather David focus on the important stuff anyway. cool.gif

Well, how complicated do you want? If you just get rid of the Paint graphics (no offense) and slap a menu on it, it looks a lot better.

Well, that's a bit too simple imo. And WavPack still needs a proper logo. The current one looks like "Made by kids on crack"TM.

No offense really, I just want the page to reflect the quality of the codec.
Ariakis
How about now? Slightly based off of the FLAC site... It still needs a proper logo, agreed, and I'm sure anyone has better taste in colors than me... So definitely let me know what can be done to improve it.

Here's a logo-example I made - it's still a quick thought

Nice! Maybe try some variations with some other fonts. Though that one is not very common, which is good.

Wow! I really appreciate your unblinking honesty, guys.... wink.gif

I am going to be busy until next week with an 80th birthday party we're throwing for my mom, but I have no objection to an updated web page. Ariakis, I really like your page design (although I guess a design compliment coming from me doesn't say much)!

sPeziFisH, I really like your logo also, but I much prefer something close to what I originally did (even if the colors need to go). The idea is that it has to be something that looks okay very small and monochrome on the side of a DVD player box or the front panel of a car stereo. smile.gif

My idea was to have the letters packed into the logo, get it? Here are some logos that I consider effective:

Here is my proposal for a monochrome logo.

user posted image

I tried to keep it similar to the idea on WavPack's page.

Also, I agree the logo should look good when printed in monochrome at a DVD player case. This subject was brought at the Xiph mailing lists once (Vorbis lacks a decent monochromable logo). Unfortunately, their mailing list search isn't working.

My criteria when creating this logo was "Would it look good printed tiny in low relief at the top of my PlayStation 2?"

It was done on Photoshop, as proper tongue.gif
sPeziFisH
As I don't have the time ATM, here are just some further quick layouts I did.
I like the font 'Airbus special' a lot (though there are a lot of nice fonts).
I don't like the layouts that much, but maybe someone is inspired by this quick & dirty designs - the wave is a bit to complicated and maybe it would look better if the wave would not be part of the text (but inside the box). Or to use a open box a wave comes in (e.g. outlined).
See you

Nice logo!!

A couple of suggestions.

Current layout: can you make W and P bigger, or more emphasized?

Slight variation: same layout, but with W and V emphasized (WaVpack): WV would recall the file format extension.
rjamorim
Here is the second version, with a W and P a little more emphasized:

user posted image

IMO, it didn't look good with W and P bigger, so I used more bold.
ilikedirtthe2nd
Nice logo, I'd like to see that one on my DVD-Player wink.gif
robUx4
You could also make a version without the "av" and "ack" and make it square. That would really be a nice icon smile.gif Both versions could be official.
damaki
I like the first one of Roberto, it's simple but really nice. The C-wave is also a good idea , emphasing both the audio and dynamism of real waves, I can almost hear the sea when I lookat this logo. smile.gif
But putting them together into one logo may be tricky. So Roberto's one could be the way to go.

Some minor thoughts:

I think the text in "files" shouldn't be centered as there is no fixpoint when browsing the files.

The colours are not too good to read. e.g. I can not differ bold from standard text easily. could be "less dark" overall wink.gif

More contrast would be helpful. don't use as much "gray on black" (bad, old tft-monitor is a drawback here).

Leave a bit more space between the header and the about box.

Thanks for your efforts so far smile.gif

Great design, but it needs a splash of color. The all-black looks kind of dark and dull. It needs some contrast.

Thanks.

Well, this was my design for a monochrome logo that can be engraved or silk-screened in the front of a DVD player.

Feel free to take the PNGs and adapt them to your idea smile.gif

In case someone is wondering, I used the font "Trebuchet MS" at 150 points. The box outside is just a square with the stroke effect set to 13 points.

It reminds me of some other logo... Which had the W (or was it V...?) and P merged (last bar of W = first bar of P)... I can't recall where from though...
robUx4
Monochrome logos are best because you can make all kinds of stuff with them. Put them on white in black, or on black in white or use colour instead of the black and put a colour inside, etc...

Roberto, could you mail me the font you used ? I'd like to make a Flash version, to scale it nicely. (that's what I did with the Matroska logo)
MugFunky
looking good.
i like the WP one.

one possible change (very slight). it would look better if the P were skewed more so it took the same angle as the last stroke on the W. seeing as these letters are joined, they should share the same angle too, or there's an unnatural corner that can be distracting.

of course, if the P is unnaturally slanted then don't worry smile.gif

(btw, i don't like the "dbx" logo at all.)

[edit]

lol! i found the Atari font on my machine. i'm so making a logo with this smile.gif

Okie, I fixed the "Files" table and added more space, but I'm about to have to head out for the day, so I'll have to work on the colors more later tonight.

If anyone has suggestions on colors, please let me know. I've always been one oriented for dark colors... would something resembling the dignified pale blue of our beautiful IPB work, for example?

Thanks for the comments, and keep 'em coming.

Really like it smile.gif

I see you're working on it... I wouldn't put the text italic and bolt together, just bolt should do it IMHO.

Maybe you could seperate the "files" in subtopics; like main files, 3rd-party tools, sources.

Just sent it smile.gif

A vector illustration (CGM, WMF) of the logo would also rock. Unfortunately, my Illustrator skills are a little too rusty, and I don't even have it installed anymore.

I agree, they look great.

I won't work on the page I was making anymore. Ariakis' is loking better, and it adheres to the standards (I am somewhat of a slouch about validation)

I made a few variants of Roberto's design in CorelDraw, so I can supply them in vector formats.
An overview can be seen here:

The big logo is nice, but maybe it's an idea to use WV in the small/square logo. Afterall it's the official extension, and when put together in the right way it will look like a sine wave.

Just some thoughts.

My photoshopping skills suck, but something like this:

I like Roberto's logos (the second large one, and the square one for DVD players smile.gif), they're simple, but effective, especially the square one - it's good that the P's vertical bar forms a line with the W's. Being monochrome, it can be used anywhere, I could imagine it looking very nice adopted to the colours used on Ariakis' site.

Roberto: Perhaps you could try making a square one with the P replaced with a V? Since we want to emphasize "WV" rather than "WP".

Edit: My idea of a perfect logo would be a "WV" version of Roberto's square logo, with WAVPACK or something like that written next to it, just like the HDCD logo.
Jasper
Here are some alternatives using the letters W and V:

They're available in a vector format if necessary.

i like the last one in the upper row (one the right side) very much.
i think it's better when the letters are not connected between themself and to the surrounding line, it's easier and faster to read.

I also tried my hand again with a couple more ideas using the HA colors:

I think that I like having a full "WavPack" for the main logo and just use a "WP" one for cases where it must be very tiny (like icons). I understand why a "WV" would make sense, but my problem with it is that it doesn't make you think of "WavPack"; and more and more I see systems set up to not even show extensions. (The funny thing is that I came up with the extension .wv before a friend suggested the name WavPack; the idea was simply that it took 1/3 off of a .wav. The original program name was wav2wv! smile.gif)

Ariakas, I really appreciate what you've done so far, and I think the HA colors are fine (unless Dibrom objects because it might suggest some kind of endorsement by HA). The only things I noticed that should go in there are the link to the old pages and some credit for yourself. Thanks again.

Here's my proposal for the logo.

The sine curve forms a W while the black/white design represents the hybrid abilities of WP.

Alright, it's been updated as requested.

I also decreased the font size 1 point, and made the site aligned/sized to fit very well in all browsers down to 800x600 resolution. This is, in my opinion, better that just setting the width to 75% of the viewport, but if you have objections just let me know and I'll change it back.

As soon as you approve, Bryant, I'll make all the links relative to the wavpack.com domain and send ya a zip. Thanks for all the suggestions too, everyone. smile.gif If there are any problems, just lemme know.

Hi Arakis, I think the font got a bit too tiny. I think it discourages a bit from reading long pasages like about text and harms the quick impression of the text.

Okie, I increased it back to 9pt, but it makes the Files table really squished. I then increased the width of the site to 760px from 720px, but it'll still hopefully fit on most 800x600 displays.
bryant
Okay, I'm happy with the page as it looks now. I appreciate all the of the sample logos (and I have kept them smile.gif), but I think that for right now we should go with Roberto's second one (full words, but with the bolded W and P) because it's simple and will look good very small. I'm not much of a graphics guru (as some may have guessed), so how do we reduce it to about 1/3 and get it on the page (in color)? smile.gif
