Hello!

For some strange reason, my LITE-ON LTR-52246S cannot erase my CD-RWs at all. Writing to CD-R and brand new CD-RWs works perfectly.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Sebastian Mares

PS: I tried with Verbatim, TDK and some cheap Intenso CD-RWs. The programs I tested with were WinOnCD and CDSpeed.

Check the Drive with different Programs, if it doesn't help get a new drive.
Some drives just make some errors before they get killed.
Average lifetime of CD-RW or DVD Re(Writers)Rom is 2 Years, the mechanics aren't constructed for a long lifetime.

Try to do a full erase instead of the quick one on problematic CDRWs.

My old MITSUMI CR-4802TE (4x/2x/8x) still operates perfectly after 5 years of daily usage.

That's what I am doing most of the time. Anyways, I tried both quick erase and full erase, but the disc surface looks exactly the same as it did before "erasing" the CD-RW. Both CDSpeed and WinOnCD take ~5 minutes to erase and no error is reported. I also did a C1/C2 test of some newly written CD-Rs and CD-RWs and the values are normal (no C2 and only a few C1 errors; average of 1.6 with a peak of 13 errors; CDSpeed reports a score of 98).

I just downloaded the trial version of CloneCD and it seems that erasing works with that program. Anyways, I would hate to pay 40 bucks just to erase CD-RWs. blink.gif

try www.burnatonce.com

I just received an error from WinOnCD:

"GRI_WRITE_BLOCK_ERROR"

If it won't erase with Nero, it is time to replace the drive. smile.gif
It is unlikely to help, but have you checked to see if you have the latest firmware?

I use the latest firmware, yes. Unfortunately, I guess LITE-ON stopped developing new firmwares for my device.

I don't use Nero, as I have WinOnCD installed.

I feel sorry for your drive Sebastian, but what is happening to it is just reflects on the fact that reliability and longevity are not on the Lite-On's priorities list.

You may want to consider a Plextor or a Pioneer for your next purchase.

Well, it's weird that CloneCD can erase the CD-RW without any problems. Also, as stated above, C1 errors are within a normal range.

I will try placing the drive into another PC and see how it operates there.

I think it could be an ASPI issue, check your layer-
Sebastian Mares
My NEC-1300A DVD writer operates well, so I doubt that it's an ASPI problem. Anyways, I am using the Nero ASPI drivers (but I don't have Nero Burning ROM installed).

I second what dreamliner77 suggested, try burnatonce, it is a free alternative without shelling out $40 for a commercial program just to erase a disc.

/\/ephaestous stated it could be an ASPI issue, if you're using Win9x/Me it probably wouldn't hurt to at least re-install the ASPI driver.

It "may" be a registry related issue, again this is pointing to an ASPI issue. I've had problems with Adaptec's ASPI driver multiple times on my old Win98 system simply because a registry key was missing, this happened even when the physical files on the disk were all present.

I will try that out, thanks.

Perhaps it isn't an ASPI issue, but a software issue.
I've been reading about some programs not working after installing SP2, I haven't encountered any myself, yet.

Did this all start happening before you applied SP2, or afterwards?

Before updating to Service Pack 2. I had Service Pack 1a installed at that time.
Anyways, problem persists even after installing Service Pack 2.

Well I just ran into either a software issue, or recorder drive issue using a 700MB Memorex High-Speed CD-RW disc.

On my WinXP Pro system burnatonce, RecordNow, and the built-in Windows CD authoring software weren't able to completely erase a disc that I use on my Win98 system for backups, I even tried to full erase the disc with burnatonce. I'd been wondering for a while why Easy CD Creator (installed on my Win98 system) was always complaining about that particular disc not being blank when I went to write to it after just erasing it on my WinXP Pro system, so I fired up IsoBuster and noticed there was still 420MB left on the disc, which was also confirmed by Easy CD Creator.

I find it to be a very strange occurance that this happens each and every time I try to erase that disc on my WinXP Pro system.

I tested the drive on a Windows 2000 system with Nero 5.5 and erasing works just fine.

At least you now know the drive isn't kaput, however that doesn't help much if it continues acting up on your WinXP system.

Well, I will reinstall my XP machine, as SP 2 caused a lot of trouble. sad.gif

Suggestion: Make a slipstreamed XP-SP2 disc and install that way. I've heard more SP2 related problems from people that installed SP2 onto a pre-existing XP install and nary a worry from folks that have done a slipstream install.
