Full Version: OGG getting press

OGG isn't officially released yet and a german computer magazine called Chip already rated it the best encoder! They compared various lossy encoders, amongst them Lame 3.92, Fraunhofer, mp3PRO, WMA8. The listening test was done by 5 'Hi-Fi experienced' Chip journalists. Not very representative but they came to a good result. It also lacks some information here and there, for example the test samples. But that's not what the average joe would like to know.

The rating is divided into encoding speed and compression (35%), quality (35%), configurability (20%) and software (10%).

Thanks to John33's oggdropXP OGG could also gather a lot of points in the category software smile.gif

Well, it's good press for Vorbis, but honsetly, their quality testing looks just as flawed as the other tests (This is from what I could understand)

Just skimming through the text... found this:

So kann der Anwender zum Beispiel mit der Einstellung \"alt-preset standard\" eine MP3-Datei von hoher Qualität erzeugen. Trotzdem ist dieses nicht viel größer als der gleiche, mit 128 KBit/s encodierte Song.
Which very roughly translates to: "The user can create high quality mp3s using the aps setting. Nevertheless the resulting mp3s aren't much bigger than the same song encoded at 128kbps." Of course that depends on how you define "not much larger". smile.gif Note that some German journalists have trouble with grammar, but maybe it's just a typo.. scnr biggrin.gif

Chip is not for the technically advanced user, which reflects in their writing style and how to conduct tests etc. But I see it as a good promotion for the right thing, as opposed to what sh*t many other sites/articles claim.

That test is 2 months old, it was first issued in CHIP 7/2002 - Vorbis certainly would have got better marks for the 64kbps test had they been able to test the new supercool tuned versions (pre-RC4 would have been enough already).

They may still not know what they're talking about really, but at least the results are "right" - it's at least a small step forward.

Der Open-Source-Encoder in der Version 1.0 Pre RC4...

But then again, anything post RC3 is pre RC4. smile.gif I agree though it's great that Vorbis is getting a voice in a popular German pc magazine. Thank you for still fighting the battle of "truth" in the Chip forum, Volcano!

...and Benjamin. After all, he was the one who put up the German Vorbis site and promoted Vorbis with "brute force" biggrin.gif

Send a message to News.com tips and tell them Vorbis 1.0 is about to be released and how a patent-free and technologically advanced codec would effect the internet music community.

News.com is a very accurate and serious tech news site. I find them quite objective too. Let them know about the quality comparisons of Vorbis vs. WMA, MP3, etc. by Byte and other organizations.

Not so many people have heard what Ogg Vorbis is. Getting it up on the news.com would raise popularity and bring new converts. biggrin.gif
