Full Version: Help cleaning old voice recording of Sigmund Freud

This (~ 11 mb wav rar compressed) recording was made at the turn of the last century and I have recorded it from tape. Needless to say, the quality of the sound is of very poor quality-hiss, clicks, crackle and rumbling everywhere.

I have tried using "Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction" and "Sonic Foundry Click and Crackle Removal" plugins, that come with "Noise Reduction 2.0" plugins pack for "Sound Forge 7.0" to clean the sound and after running each plugin two times, I have managed to get rid of most of the nasty stuff but now the recording sounds unnatural and I still cannot get rid of the low frequency rumbling/humming noise (~ 85K wav), almost like a jet engine.

I have "Sound Forge 7.0" with "Noise Reduction 2.0" and I would like to know what sequence of plugins, with what settings, would clean the sound, including the rumbling/humming noise (~ 85K wav) that I have been unable to remove, without destroying the speech.

Thanks! smile.gif

EDITED FOR GRAMMER. thank god for spell chequers

Low rumble is eliminated best by using the parametric eq (set to some subsonic filter - low-frequency steep highpass)

My favourite plugins are the waves restoration tools like x-crackle, x-hum and x-click ... I find them to be more useable than the ones from sonic foundry/sony.

Oh thanks! biggrin.gif

I listened to the Freud part--it's much better than the original, but there is still a strong amount of hiss and crackle.

Here (~3.2 mb mp3 rar compressed) is what I came up with after two passes of "Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction" and two passes of "Sonic Foundry Click and Crackle Removal".

As you can hear, the speech sounds unnatural and there is still a low frequency humming/rumbling sound. I would like to hear your opinion on my work.

Thanks!

Well, I prefer mine, but it is probably a matter of personnal taste.
Your one is muffled and sometimes the voice is unnatural, but you removed most of the noise.

Mine seems more present/natural, but there is still a lot of crackling.

Mine is Audacity processed:
*FFT filter
*noise removal (1st select a speech-free part, then analyse, then select the Freud part, then apply)
*compressor (to expand dynamic range)

note: no need to keep it at 44.1kHz, 22 is enough.

I find (especially with the Sound Forge plugin's) that it works best if you run many runs of the noise reduction/pop-click remover plugins and only remove minimal noise each time.

I played around with it a little bit. You can find my little sample here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=25793

Is this the interview that was broadcast by the BBC in December 7th 1938?

If so, it's quite likely that, if it survives at all, it'll be in the BBC archives. That's not to say that you'll be able to access it, but it's probably there.

A google search for Sigmund Freud BBC interview 1938 found

http://www.arches.uga.edu/~parrott/Freud.html
and
http://www.freud-museum.at/freud/media/audio-e.htm

These start at a different point to your version, but are from the same interview and contain much of the same material.

They both appear to be taken from the same source as each other - which (as can be heard on the second site) is of much higher quality than the one you are starting from! Even this common source appears to be a copy (with a false start) from the original BBC archive disc, so an even better copy may well be in existence.

I did this search because it was obvious that your version was a copy of a copy of a copy (at least!) and the most important thing in audio restoration - more important than software - is to use the best possible source!

An archive disc, copied to tape, taken to America, copied onto a disc, scratched heavily, copied onto tape, and then finally copied into a PC is not a suitable starting point, unless all earlier generation copies have been destroyed.

Cheers,
David.

That is easier when we know which recording is it.

This version seems cleaner:

Freud Fans, @2Bdecided and @Gabriel, et all.

Thanks for all your help. 2Bdecided thanks for the BBC Archives idea. Gabriel thanks for the link I found your version to be very clean and a movie that I have been looking for a long time.

The tape I obtained is from a major university. I believe that all versions on the net are edited as I have been unable to find the full 'uncut' version anywhere. The version I posted in my first post is not the full version (I had to cut out the voice of Theodor Reik, as my ISP would not let me post a 28 mb file)

Here (~8.2 mb mp3 rar compressed) is the full 'uncut' version that I have cleaned up to the best of my abilities without destroying the speech.

You might want to copy/paste the different parts to obtain the best results:
your version have the speaker voice, the other versions found on the net are obviously raw from the sound recording as we even hear Freud restarting the begining of his speech.

Good idea. I'll try cut and paste if I can't obtain the original copy.
The recording with Freud restarting his speech (from the Freud Museum) looks to
be just another tape copy (like mine) as there is too much clipping (I might be wrong though).
